That is good to know, thanks.

Maybe I don't understand but I think you're saying the distant dealer would have the car driven to my local one? I'm kind of funny about the miles on a new car. I don't want a car that has to be driven 50 or 100 miles to get it to the dealer I am to buy it from. I worked at dealerships from my late teens to early twenties and I've seen things... If a new car on the lot has more than 20, 30 miles on it then I am hesitating. If I'm paying for all of that depreciation then I'll be the one doing the depreciating.

Even if all that goes my way, the deal still hinges on my getting the advertised 0.9% rate.

Why not drive the 50 to 100 miles for a better deal, if that’s the case? Unless it was over a small difference in price.

Bought a Mazda back in 2014. They will negotiate some but not a ton. Look for special incentives like discounted financing.

I think if you get them between 5-10% off MSRP you are doing pretty well.

Those CX5s are nice - my Mazda6 has been very reliable - have 122k on it now.

They're a great value IMO.

I would second going onto the forums and see what others are paying. Many times some dealers come on there and set up a group buy at a fixed percentage off MSRP or invoice.

As an example I just bought the new Jeep Gladiator Rubicon as a retirement present to myself. Some dealers were trying to sell the cars with a $2-5K dealer market adjustment because there is such high demand for this unique vehicle.

Well to make a long story short I ordered one through a dealer about 100 miles away for 5% below INVOICE! The price was as quoted without any last minute nonsense.

A little research can save you thousands.

Good point, if the price is right...

Thanks mcrimm I've avoided Costco because I live alone and I'm afraid I'd end up impulse buying pallets of TP or something like that! Big Grin

Costco memberships start at ~$55, you can order products online and cancel at any time for a refund. You literally would go on their website, put in the model details, some basic contact info and then the dealers will reach out to you with availability and pricing. No commitment, low/no pressure. You get all the manufacturers perks and costco does a post-purchase survey to make sure you were satisfied. My wife saved 4.5k off of a 27-28k Mazda3 in Mar 18.

Besides, you can’t ever have too much TP.

I'm sorry if I hurt you feelings when I called you stupid - I thought you already knew - Unknown

Go to Edmunds.com, look up the car, find out what the invoice price is, go to the options section and add up the invoice price of those, get a total, then go to the rebates/incentives section and see what rebates apply. Make an offer $1-2k below invoice and before rebates...….and mention that......offer that amount before any rebates and see if you can get it at invoice and then subtract the rebates...….I'd do a search within 100 miles or so and email every dealer that has one. But there are many factors that also make price the price...….popularity, the dealers inventory and how long they've had the car, and Spiffs from the manufacturer that nobody knows about, etc.

I just did this. I had a number in my that I had worked through. I asked him for his best price. He beat my number. I offered him a 1000 under that. He took off 400 more. 2019 Toyota RAV4, Adventure trim level. Sticker just over 36k. They took 5400 off. I was looking at the hybrid but they weren’t moving off their offer much. The 4000 dollar difference will buy a lot of gas. Lol

Personally I think a lot of advice above gets you in the ballpark of “fair”. I also think you need to avoid getting locked into a particular car. I was going back and forth between another Subaru and this one. I honestly would have been happy with either but the Toyota guy wanted to play ball and the pricing alone won out.

Have a number you are happy with, play hardball, stay flexible. Time of the month stuff is no joke. Good luck.

Btw, last two cars I bought allowed me to put 5k on the credit card giving me an instant 2.5% back. I won’t step over 125 doleros.

That's truth.

Last two cars bought on last day of the month in the evening. First one I pulled let me call my wife. Told sales guy she said not a penny over $24k out the door. This guy had to talk to his managers, managers, manager to get deal approved (more likely just went in back and played with his phone for a while a couple of times. Kept coming back closer, but not $24k. Finally I said I was done, that was my limit, he could accept it or talk to my wife and try to convince her. He broke and agreed after three hours of playing games (I was not married at the time, but it worked at 9pm on the 30th of month).

Most recent one. Played two dealerships off each other. Told them I was only accepted for a $26.5k loan (really was I had a top end monthly payment I wanted). Finally on 5/31/19 one dealer calls and agrees. As I'm on my way to pick up car, other dealer calls and says he'll meet my price. Told him too late other dealer already met my offer, he had to beat it. He did, but I didn't like the guy so the $250 difference wasn't worth it and I already passed exit so I told him it wasn't low enough. Arrive at dealer to pick up car, asshole says he made a mistake, the color I wanted was the only one on the lot without an extra $500 factory incentive (probably BS), I said I want the car for the agreed upon price. Bunch of I have to talk to manager BS. Finally I just wanted to leave told him I'd split the $500 with him just to get out the door. Paul extra in cash and got my desired out the door price.

Best thing for car shopping is to never do it when you need a car. Take a month to let the sales guy try to court you while playing other suitors off each other. One will get desperate and make a deal that only pockets them $200 so they meet their numbers and get larger bonuses at month/quarter ends.

This has all been on my mind. My Jeep and my van both run great and are perfect for around town but suck on the highway for various reasons. I absolutely do not need a new vehicle right now I just want one. I'm getting older and I deserve something nice. I turned up the urgency this week because of the end of the month and the 0.9% offer that ends Monday.

Dealer #2 hasn't replied to me as of yet so I sent #1 a counter offer for 10.5% under MSRP.

To be continued...

23% off on my just purchased car. 41k MSRP, $31.5k "sales price" which ended up at $34.5k after taxes, tags, fees, and other BS. 2019 Fusion Sport.

41k msrp for a fusion? Damn. Ford has a ton of markup in their vehicles. No way possible to get that much off msrp on Honda or Toyota cars. The money isn’t there.

Car was built to be Euro Sport Sedan competition. Every option Ford offers plus 325hp and 380tq, active dampening suspension, every safety feature possible, etc. Didn't sell well, and they canceled them a week or two after I bought the car, so more than normal discounts. The other car I was looking at was the Civic Type R MRSP $37k, best price I could find $38.5k. Same thing with the WRX STI, very little wiggle room on price so while high MSRP, it was a much better value vs Honda at over MSRP and Subaru at just a little under MSRP.
