It must seem odd to say that a 98 2/3-year-old died unexpectedly, but that is how our family is feeling. She went to sleep in her own bed and didn't wake up. She was a very special lady. My father died when I was 9-months-old, but I hit the single mother jackpot. She did not speak English when she started school and ended up speaking almost British English routinely would quote famous authors from memory. She did not understand why she needed to press 1 for English when we lived in the United States. She was kind and giving but a tough parent. When I strayed I would hear, "young man I am raising a man and right now I am just not seeing it." I am so grateful that she loved me enough to be tough when needed. My family was blessed by her and already miss her.

I'm sorry for your loss. Nobody expects to lose a loved one, it's a shock at any age.

May you find comfort in the memories of her.

Unexpected, perhaps, but peacefully, without a long illness. My condolences.

My sympathy to you. 98...there is no good time to lose a mother, especially one like you describe. I too hit the single mother jackpot, my father gone when I was 5. I know it doesn't ease the pain now, but as Mars said, you were truly blessed to have her in your life so long.

Sorry for your loss.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
