For those of us that are largely over 40 or 50, where were you 30 years ago?
I was a young (younger?) Computer Systems Engineer. 9/11 had not yet happened and the world was my oyster. I traveled for work as my territory at the time was all of North America and most of Europe. Still I found the time to use Europe as my springboard for the rest of the world.
I had bought my first condo, had my first pet (cat, yes, not a ‘real’ pet, I know), and drove a Dodge (yes, not a 'real' car, I know). I had many more friends back in the day than I do now, but today’s friends are better than the ones I had back in the day, if you know what I mean.
It was a time before all of this upset, difficulty, and unrest. It was an innocent time, in comparison to today. Things were so simple as compared to what followed.
Heading west, out of San Diego, onboard the USS Tarawa. In three and a half months, the USS Cole would be attacked and Clinton didn't allow us to go after the attackers.
Damn, my math sucked when writing this.
In 1990 (NOT 2000), I was at Miramar, in VF-2, prepping for Desert Storm. This message has been edited. Last edited by: LS1 GTO,

Anybody else long for days gone past?
Where were you 20 (or 30, or 40) years ago?

30 years ago, I/we were in exactly the same place we are now. I had just retired and living the life. Did a lot of traveling around the country, a few trips to Europe to visit family and long term school friends of my wife's.

I was living in my childhood home in the Upper Midwest. A Saturday in late July would've been only a week or two before football 2 a days so I had probably lifted early afternoon and was probably recuperating in or next to the pool.
The most beautiful girl in school lived across the street and had a shady backyard so she sunbathed in her front yard. If she was doing that my truck probably needed washing

My wife and I were living in Northern Kentucky. We had just found out we were expecting our first child, and I had recently begun work for the Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company. Good times!
Just starting out my own consulting business (computer/networking infrastructure implementation and administration for small and medium sized businesses). I'd had a fair amount of experience as a Govt. contractor in the same field, and was delighted to be working for myself, and not having to deal with businessmen rather than COTRs and COs. Ironically, over the decades, most of my clients have been in Govt. contracting in one way or another, but that shouldn't be surprising given my location inside the DC beltway. I'm still doing the same general thing, adapted to technology changes, although not many hours being billed since the Big Kahuna virus reared its ugly head.

Living in the barracks at NAS Miramar and working on mighty F-14 Tomcat at VF-124. I was a single 20yr old kid from Kansas City in 1990 SoCal, you do the math on what I was doing when I wasn't wrenching on the world's greatest fighter.

I was at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1990. Had been selected as a member of the senior management project team for the first engineered refueling overhaul (ERO) of a 688 class submarine. Half million mandays of work were involved. Tons of huge PERT charts were generating as the roadmap showing the resultant work execution sequences (critical paths) and interrelationships with all the tasks involved. We spent almost 3 years planning and commenced work on the USS LOS ANGLES SSN-688 in late 1992. The planned 24 month ERO was completed ahead of schedule and under cost.

Still onboard my first Navy ship with counter narcotics operations in the Carribean and a gulf war half way 'round the world still ahead of me before transferring to first shore duty. Almost fifteen years later, would do the same gulf war thing all over again onboard my fourth and last ship.

30 years ago I stopped by an ATM to get some cash & was told no money in account. I called my wife & was told she had something to tell me. Got home & was told all the bank accounts were closed, locks were changed on shared offices & she had filed for divorce. Turns out she had developed a relationship with an attorney!
