Well, it's not like it's a yearly event. The last time there was a solar eclipse observable in the continental United States was 99 years ago.

Yes, I realize that. Unfortunately, the vast majority are too stupid to know that and are likely going to be disappointed.

Haha, yeah, you ain't wrong about that. And it's only for what? A minute or two?

I'm sure that'll be worth an entire day stuck on the highway. Roll Eyes

But seriously, I feel bad for the folks who had plans to visit Yellowstone or the Tetons during this time and didn't even consider that they planned their vacation during a solar freakin' eclipse.

actually....no....

I attended one of considerable totality, in SE Washington State 40 years ago. I'm sure there's been others.

Did see a reference to the claim "there hasn't been one starting on one ocean and continuing clear across the country, ending at the other ocean'. Haven't verified that particular claim, it may well be so. Many of our total solar eclipses are not the width of 'sea to shining sea' variety.

Uh, no. There's been a ton of them. I saw one (partial) in '94 in Indiana.

There's been 4 Total eclipses since 1963, the latest in 1979

First time in 99 years: US total solar eclipse on 21 August excites scientists
Entire US will fall into shadow as eclipse passes, with darkest path, or ‘totality’, contained in 70-mile (113km) ribbon from Oregon to South Carolina

https://www.theguardian.com/sc...t-excites-scientists

What was meant was the first time in 99 years that the entire continental US will see a total solar eclipse. The most amount of people ever will be able to observe it.

I have a cousin with a big open farm in the NW corner of Missouri and it would be a terrific place to view the eclipse. Unfortunately, He's a 2-3 day drive from me and I am already scheduled to go up there about 3 weeks later and cannot justify making a separate trip just to see an eclipse. I'll watch it on TV.

Yeah. I don't know what everyone is getting all worked up about. I was able to watch a total Earthar Eclipse last night. It lasted about 8-9 hours, not sure if I was in path of totality or not, but I was also able to observe a nearly full moon at the same time. The memories will last a lifetime.

As a bonus I did not even use any kind of solar filter for the entire viewing experience.

Not sure either if this one went coast to coast or not, but it was damn impressive....

There's probably gonna be an upturn in eye doc's business starting on 22 August!
You're probably right. Too bad there isn't any treatment for solar retinopathy.

I haven't been able find any safety glasses but I may not need them. We are in our usual fire season and the smoke is getting worse every day. Here is a photo of the sun from a couple of years ago.

NASA has a couple of apps related to the eclipse.

Eyes on the Eclipse Web App lets you view the eclipse from multiple locations and perspectives.

NASA's Eyes - Experience Earth & our solar system, the universe, and the spacecraft exploring them. Apps for Mac, PC, & mobile devices.

I've been having fun checking these out.

I have to work this day... Literally being called in 4 hours early, due to the amount of silly nonsense we are expecting..

Swallow that... We are calling in officers, because we literally expecting people to be extra stupid during a scientific phenomenon....

That SHOULD be sad... but sadly, is just routine...

I'm taking the little boy to mom and dad's in the NC mountains...

dad has been griping about possibly "end of days" the news has been pushing, like their not being enough gasoline, food stuffs being bought out due to the number of people who are coming to the area....

So if anyone is in or around Franklin NC on 21AUG..feel free to stop by, call, send smoke signals....we might even hoist a beer but I can promise there will be no nude dancing or chanting!!!

Listening to the radio the other day, and they were interviewing somebody or another. They claimed that many are modeling the need based on what happened in Europe during a recent eclipse.

It wasn't so much extra stupid, as it was the regular amount of stupid multiplied by the influx of additional people.
