European Union has the "answer". Flatten the curve. There you go video at https://twitter.com/i/status/1567462388898594816 EU will propose a " mandatory target for reducing electricity use at peak hours" in order to "flatten the curve."

Gasoline? Or does that also extend to natural gas, propane and diesel?

Diesel and propane are exempt. For now.

Dumb question: what fuel source is preferred for generators? Gas, diesel, NG or propane? I’ve never had use for one for the past 20 years. But may reconsider with the drive toward idiocy. Doesn't seem fair that toasters and waffle irons are getting a pass, not to mention Keurigs and espresso makers.

Just guessing here, but I'd say propane. Gasoline and diesel degrade and/or get contaminated in storage. Propane (and NG), being in a sealed, pressurized container, should not be subject to this.

Properly stored with a biocide and a water absorber (Howell’s, etc), diesel will last more than a decade, minimum. Diesel generators are generally higher end, and are more expensive up front, but with a four-pole commercial gen head, will produce cleaner power. I like Central Maine Diesel for high-quality reliable generators. They sell the real deal. Check out their diesel section. https://www.centralmainediesel.com/ Demand not that events should happen as you wish; but wish them to happen as they do happen, and you will go on well. -Epictetus

I predict that by 2035 no one in California will see the sun again as the entire state will be covered with a solar panel grid. Written by a dumb-ass from Palo Alto who was bent out of shape due to all the leaf blowers, weed wackers and edgers that humm-away servicing all those multi-million dollar homes, corporate business parks and private school campus'. The irony is stunning..... It was written in such a way that it also bans generators and chainsaws....just about every home in the Sierras and rural areas now have a generator of some sort. Home connected Generac or, a portable Honda... with all the fires and resulting outages over the last 5-years, everyone has made the investment. Costco and Sam's everywhere has pallets of generators, now with this law, they've gone deep on battery powered blowers, mowers, etc.

This question is worth it's own thread. If you are running a large building, like a hospital, then Diesel, but for a backup for your home, well, it all depends. For smaller general purpose loads of a few thousand watts max, I really like the newer invertor type, but I know many people who hate them. So it all depends. I'm certain the SigForum regulars would have a lot to say about this topic. .

npr, of all places, reported the story of a new battery storage technology for long term, hi volume storage of electricity. Developed in the USA, funded by tax payer dollars, and then transferred to China! The U.S. made a breakthrough battery discovery — then gave the technology to China Too long to post, but here are a couple of highlights... 1.Apparantly, we are now trying to stop the transfer... "Department of Energy officials declined NPR's request for an interview to explain how the technology that cost U.S. taxpayers millions of dollars ended up in China. After NPR sent department officials written questions outlining the timeline of events, the federal agency terminated the license with the Chinese company, Dalian Rongke Power Co. Ltd." 2. Apparantly we are too late... "Chinese news reports say the country is about to bring online one of the largest battery farms the world has ever seen. The reports say the entire farm is made up of vanadium redox flow batteries."

I looked into disposal of expired solar panels. If I recall correctly there is a fair amount of toxic bi-product in their mfg, and greater toxic potential in their eventual disposal. Both need to be addressed, not publicized.

Yeah, much of the consumer electronics that's sold today is done with what is known as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS). You may see the RoHS marking on many consumer electronic devices. Very little or no Lead even in the solder, no Cadmium, no Mercury or other such material. There's a long list. But, solar panels are exempt from RoHS, and they contain all kinds of nasty stuff. Or at least they were exempt --- it's been about 6 years since I last checked. These directives are always changing, but I doubt solar panels are RoHS compliant even today. So yes, they should be disposed of properly. .

Yet, it still won't matter. Generating adequate power is one thing (and something California has completely failed to accomplish), but the actual 'grid', the power distribution infrastructure, is wholly inadequate to carry all that addition power to end users. No way by 2035 California manages to completely overhaul the 'grid' and find an adequate, acceptable, source of energy to meet the demand. In layman's terms, if you continue to live in California, you are completely screwed. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom.
