Upon seeing this today, my reaction was:

This the guy that made that stinker Prometheus? While I agree with him, his words aren’t exactly controversial.

Jr df#4 loves super hero movies. I don’t share his passion. I think they are a tired mimeographed plot with predictable ends and passable acting. They are cash machines driven by patrons who are easily entertained. Sorry. No offense to those who like them

In the same vein of “90% of everything is shit,” it’s the 10% that people remember. It’s also the same with Ridley Scott. 90% of his movies aren’t great, but the 10% that isn’t make him the legend he is.

Hmm... A 90/10 split is a hard sell for Ridley Scott's career, IMO. Let's check out his filmography of 26 films he's directed (not counting the couple more that are in the pipeline but haven't been released):

1977 The Duelists
1979 Alien
1982 Blade Runner
1985 Legend
1987 Someone to Watch Over Me
1989 Black Rain
1991 Thelma & Louise
1992 1492: Conquest of Paradise
1996 White Squall
1997 G.I. Jane
2000 Gladiator
2001 Hannibal
2001 Black Hawk Down
2003 Matchstick Men
2005 Kingdom of Heaven
2006 A Good Year
2007 American Gangster
2008 Body of Lies
2010 Robin Hood
2012 Prometheus
2013 The Counselor
2014 Exodus: Gods and Kings
2015 The Martian
2017 Alien: Covenant
2017 All the Money in the World
2021 The Last Duel

No, they're not 100% great by any stretch of the imagination. A few of them are real stinkers, in fact. But by my count, he's at around 7 (27%) that are excellent, and another 4 or 5 (split the difference and call it 17.5%) that are good but not amazing.

Though to be fair, on a couple of those excellent films, it did take him a couple cracks at various cuts/edits before finding the sweet spot, like Blade Runner and Kingdom of Heaven.

Still, that's a better average than many other directors out there, and a far cry from only having 2 to 3 great films (10%).

Yeah the superhero movies are garbage. My 12yo son likes them so it’s something we can watch together at least.

I wanted to like Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot makes me have a funny feeling like after climbing the rope in gym class.

In the preview when she does a flying knee to the Kraut out the window and the camera freezes and pans around, awesome special effects!

…and then they proceeded to use that same trick in every. single. fight.

It’s the quote I found. I’d argue there’s more than 10% of superhero movies that are excellent, but the trash that is getting thrown in to make a quick buck doesn’t disqualify the great ones that were made. Just like Ridley Scott’s career. My count is 9 good (The Duelists, Alien, Blade Runner, Black Rain, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, The Martian {despite Matt Damon}, and All the Money In The World) and the rest crap (about 30/70). It’s also hard to argue him not eclipsing The Duelists, Alien, and Blade Runner (which would be 10%).

He’s definitely not Christopher Nolan who’s worst movie might be a good one like “Insomnia.”

Agree with him. Nolan's trilogy was excellent, and so were 1-2 of the Marvel bullshit films. Dr. Strange an that first Thor. None of the rest of the 30 odd movies were worth 2 shits to me. All of the Disney stuff is really crap. Good on Ridley to have the balls to say it.

Bladerunner alone is better than every Marvel movie ever made combined.

Of all the Alien movies, I lied that one the best.

This pretty much sums up Prometheus and why it kinda sucks.

Prometheus was far above the original Aliens films.

Thelma and Louise ? Great in my opinion.

Prometheus wasn't bad, but that's quite the stretch. For me, it barely ranks as the third best Alien film, behind Alien and Aliens.

I haven't been able to stay interested in Prometheus long enough to finish it. Maybe I'll try it again. Alien was the best of that series, probably just because it was the first and set the bar. Aliens was good shoot-em-up fun to watch. 3 and 4, meh at best.

Prometheus falls apart the longer the movie goes. If you can make the edits in your brain that this is LV-426 and the movie ends at the crash of the two ships, it's ok.

Except you can't....

Yep.

And we won't even bother ranking the *ugh* Alien vs. Predator flicks.
