A pressing question for the forum.

Question:
What's your attitude towards the end pieces of a loaf of bread?

Choices:
Toss them in the trash
Bird/duck food
Same as any other slice
Eat them last
Wish there more than 2 in each loaf

My wife acts as if they’re some how contaminated. Me, I don’t care. I don’t each much loaf bread, but the kids do. When we get to the ends I just turn them so that the inside is facing out and load them up like normal. Kids don’t care one bit, but she just looks at me like I’m some unwashed heathen.

Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view.

Complacency sucks…

Usually it would be bird food. Since bread is hard to find these days, I would probably make a grilled cheese with them.

The heel was traditionally treasured as having more mass. The lucky man received the heel slathered in lard for breakfast.

You can make croutons with them.

Toast, chop, season and oil with anything you want. Or hot bacon grease!

Could be a day when one wished there was even the heel to eat.

No suitable choice listed, but I either hit them with some butter and jam or make French Toast out of 'em.

Save them til last only because it helps keep the piece on the end of the loaf from drying out.

Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I learned over the weekend how to make bread, it was fun, and delicious. I will make some more this weekend, not because it's out, but because it's awesome. Used the last of it last night for some shit on a shingle, damn tasty.

I ate the end piece while waiting for the toast to toast.

Shouldn't that TECHNICALLY be "while waiting for the BREAD to toast"??? Big Grin Big Grin

I actually thought about changing that, then I figured in the end it was toast, so it works. You don't bake dough, you bake bread, even though it's not bread until after you've baked it. Not sure what the 'right' way to write that sentence is.

I don't like the end pieces, or "heels." Usually a pound and a half loaf goes stale or otherwise unappealing before I can finish it anyway. I only eat them if they're the only bread left and it's still two days to payday.

Heels work just fine for sandwiches. Not so much for toast. I eat them last.
