Dad always told us kids “that’s where all the vitamins are”. As if kids gave a rats’s ass about vitamins.

I usually eat them last but if the wife gets to them first they're bird food.

The ends serve a vital function of protecting the delicate inside bread slices from drying out. Eat the inner slices till there are none, then eat the ends.

Partaking of the end piece first is how you interview the loaf of bread.

Toast them after letting them protect all the other slices.

I just didn't expect the heel pieces to be so popular. Most people in my family are not fans, although I like them.

Wife just made the first batch of bread made with freshly ground hard red winter wheat berries, using our micronizer grain mill and Bosch mixer. Much better than the previous batch made with commercial flour.
When that batch comes out of the oven, the heel is the first eaten; the rest doesn't last long.
I fear unwanted weight gain coming.

I didn’t vote because there is no use with soup or stew option. End pieces are great dunkers in certain soups and stews.
