I never heard of it until I checked in at my duty station as a brand new Ensign. It was part of the check in process. I believe in those days you had to be on active duty when you joined. It wasn’t open even to Reservists.

I think I have saved more on insurance premiums in the last ~50 years than I made the whole time
I was in the Navy.

They also allow FBI and Secret Service Special Agents, that are not military veterans. They claim it's because those agents are not allowed to serve in the Reserves or Guard, and therefore "never had an opportunity" to become eligible through military service.

That's nonsense though, because they could have served, and many did, prior to taking those jobs (just like I did before I went into fed LE). Also, the FBI no longer tries to deny their agents their right to serve in the Guard or Reserves.

If they didn't serve in the military I don't think they should be allowed to join.

They won't allow any other Fed LEOs to join without having served in the military.

Sorry if that came off as snobbish. But anytime a group greatly expands who they let in, the product and service becomes diluted. That's my main point.

I doubt it was snobbish.

I imagine that commissioned officers had a much better loss/claim history as a group than all military members as a group, at least decades ago, if not as much now.

It is a mutual society, so all members benefit from low premiums and low claims. As an aside, this was also the underwriting edge of Government Employees Insurance Co, now more familiarly known as GEICO.

When I was on active duty, motorcycle dealers in San Diego did a big business selling high performance machines to sailors, and Marines, on easy credit, but credit life insurance premiums were required to be paid in cash, up front, no exceptions, a result of the unhappy experience that so many did not survive the first day. Very few if any of these were commissioned officers.

USAA for 20 years straight. They are more expensive than some other competing companies. No problems.
