Good to see the cops got a suspect

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A suspect in the killings of four University of Idaho students was arrested in eastern Pennsylvania, a law enforcement official said Friday.

Arrest paperwork filed in Monroe County Court said Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, was being held for extradition to Idaho on a warrant for first degree murder.

A law enforcement official confirmed the arrest to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official could not publicly discuss details of the investigation ahead of a formal announcement expected later Friday.

A Ph.D. student by the same name is listed in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University, which is a short drive across the state line from the University of Idaho. Messages seeking more information were left for officials at WSU.

The Idaho students — Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin — were stabbed to death at a rental home near campus sometime in the early morning hours of Nov. 13. The slayings initially mystified law enforcement, with investigators unable to name a suspect or locate a murder weapon for weeks.

But the case broke open after law enforcement asked the public for help finding a white sedan seen near the home around the time of the killings. The Moscow Police Department made the request Dec. 7, and by the next day had to direct tips to a special FBI call center because so many were coming in.

Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho; Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Kernodle, 20, of Post Falls, Idaho; and Chapin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Washington, were members of the university's Greek system and close friends. Mogen, Goncalves and Kernodle lived in the three-story rental home with two other roommates. Kernodle and Chapin were dating and he was visiting the house that night.

Autopsies showed all four were likely asleep when they were attacked. Some had defensive wounds and each was stabbed multiple times. There was no sign of sexual assault, police said.

I'm very curious to know the motive in this one. Just very bizarre.

Hmmm, perhaps the killings were part of his thesis. He really wanted that visceral feeling, you know?

Is there more to it beyond just having been seen in the area? Is it really suspect or just a POI?

Tabloid sensationalism

I've been trying to avoid this stuff for weeks.

They're force-feeding this shit to people. If Nancy Grace is on it, you should avoid it.

The whole thing is shameful

And I don't care who was arrested or their name or if their neighbors say "He was a quiet guy, always kept to himself". I don't want to hear stories from the parents of the deceased, nor of the first responders or these kids' classmates.

They've taken these kids bodies and they're running them through a sausage grinder 24/7, because they know people will tune in for this stuff and that means advertising revenue.

Stories early on about blood dripping from walls and all that. Damn. I'd take a flamethrower to these people.

The Fox News website has had this story plastered front and center every day for the past 2 months. Every day. And sometimes there are two or three different articles at the same time. I don't know about the other news websites, but FNC has been particularly atrocious in its nonstop sensationalism. I'm sure the others were no different.

"Atrocious sensationalism" to you, perhaps, but BIG news to the small towns around these parts where this kind of stuff doesn't happen. And with a killer on the loose and potentially in a neighboring community, folks want to know what's going on with the investigation. I don't happen to think that this one was overdone.

Glad they caught the SOB. Hopefully we'll see him at the end of a rope soon.

It is not- and never was- a national story. Why do people in Pensacola or Houston need to know about this?

And the way it was handled in the media- vultures and jackals

Well, not sure how it all panned out, but he was caught in PA...2500 miles away from Moscow. Wink

I agree that far too often the jackals pounce on these stories, particularly when fresh, but it doesn't seem as though they went overboard here to me. Perhaps that's because this one hit a little too close to home for comfort and I wanted any information they could provide.

I get that folks in Atlanta probably don't give two shits about four kids being murdered in Idaho, as that kind of stuff happens much more frequently there. But, FNC, et al..., are national/worldwide news sources. I don't imagine that they can taylor their coverage locally. It'd be kind of nice if they did though.

Something strikes me odd about Nancy Grace that's off-putting. Either she's affected a persona that sensationalizes what she's talking about or she's been warped by her prior work. I think she needs help.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I wasn't even aware of the incident until they mentioned the arrest on the local "news"... this morning?

This kind of relates to the thread about the "CALM" app. I'm significantly less anxious/stressed/what-have-you than I used to be because I simply do not watch, listen to, or read the crap that passes for "news" these days.

One of the reasons why is, even when they're not propagandizing or outright making schitt up, they're dramatizing every last thing.

It's no wonder most people are walking around wired seven ways from Sunday

Idaho has the death penalty. I'd say a conviction in this case deserves it.

They recently postponed an execution, unable to get the drugs.

I'm partial to the firing squad.

Years ago she was the victim of a violent crime. She has turned that into what she is. Her use of the word, Friend is presumptious and annoying. She is a know it all and over top with her emotions. Most men I know cannot stand her.

They’ve got this guy nailed, and it will be great to see this hopefully soon come to a close.

Excellent work here by the all agencies involved — this dude is about as psychopath as they come.

I only live about 60 miles from where the crime occurred so I’ve been profiling the hell out of any white Hyundai Elantra I see … as expected, that was pointless, being that this shitbag wouldn’t have looked suspect, anyway.

Most persons live a sheltered life, and when stories like this are published it provides a benefit to many persons. Police who work on murder cases have a much better understanding of what humans are capable of doing. For the rest of the population, a reminder of what is out there helps jolt people out of their perceived reality.

Personally I read about such cases in detail, as I try to understand how people think. I spent decades hiding from someone as evil as this perp. If you have ever been an intended homicide victim, you would know what it feels like.

I'm with Gustofer on this. This is considered local to us as well. Moscow Idaho is a relatively small collage town where the bulk of its residences didn't lock their doors at night as a rule. That's changed now after this crime occurred. It demonstrates that this can happen anywhere, not just the large liberal blue states. So yeah, I'm thrilled that a suspect has been found and locked up. I truly hope the community can overcome the trauma this has caused but it will take a long time to get back to their normal.

Jim

Yeah, that's what's going on, man- it's an educational experience. It's not lurid and people should not bother to question themselves as to why a murder of people they never met, in a place they'll never go, should be of great interest to themselves. The way this incident has been portrayed in the media is not pornographic in nature, a real-life slasher film.

As you say, paying close attention to these types of violent crime enriches us, makes us more worldly, more wise. We are better people for having allowed all details of these murders into our lives. People should feel really good that they allow the media to lead them by the nose and turn a really juicy story with semi-daily installments into money for the hawkers.
