Fox News is reporting the verdict just read in the courtroom- guilty of murder.

Fights are already breaking out outside of the courthouse, the crowd has supporters for both Anthony and Metcalf.

I was watching a live view of people outside the courthouse and some woman stamped her feet and fell, what looked like wailing, to the ground. I assumed she found out the verdict.

This same jury that convicted gets to determine sentencing.

Yup - Reaped what he sowed -- it's a shame it wasn't Capital murder where he could get what he gave - Also McKinney police, Colin County Sheriff, and Texas DPS wanted everyone to know that this isn't Minnesota - the 1st person that threw down was cuffed and stuffed in a cruiser in about 15 seconds

I cant find a link to post - watching live on Fox as the verdict was reported - the on site reporter talked about several officers breaking up a "fight" and escorting a person to a cruiser

The only person to take the stand in the punishment phase was Karmelo Anthony's mother. She begged for mercy.
'Please have mercy on my son,' Hayes sobbed as she looked at the jury.
Both sides have closed out their cases. The court is now working on a charging document and will return.

Here's the explaination Gemini (Google AI) gives re Cruel and unusual punishment in context of the 8th amendment.

Core Legal Standards: The U.S. Supreme Court interprets this clause based on four central principles to determine if a penalty is unconstitutional:
Evolving Standards of Decency: The phrase is not frozen in 1791. It changes over time based on the "evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society.

Proportionality: The severity of the punishment must fit the severity of the crime. For example, sentencing someone to life in prison for a minor traffic violation violates this rule.

Human Dignity: Punishments cannot involve unnecessary torture, physical barbarism, or lingering deaths.

Arbitrariness: A punishment cannot be applied randomly or discriminatorily.

We have a brutal, premeditated murder that according to Texas law he may only be imprisoned. Folks, that apparently is no deterrent today. Why can't the punishment fit the crime and (for example) include daily public floggings? This would fit the evolving standard for the purpose of deterrence. It's not unnecessary torture, it's absolutely necessary if we're to get violent criminal activity under control.

This sort of shit goes on across the country. Why do we tolerate it?
