Isn’t that pretty much standard practice when convicted for murder?

If this had been the other way around, they would be screaming for the death penalty.

Race had nothing to do with the verdict.

I fail to understand, how this country came to a point where a person can commit a heinous crime and is caught, but gains public support due to the heavy penalty that crime carries if convicted.

Totally normal, but, they'll still have to find a valid reason to be granted that appeal...

There are always appeals, especially after murder convictions. First is Post Conviction Relief in that something the trial judge did was wrong or the specific law is wrong, or something was incorrect (like wrong jury instructions going back to the jury). Then there will be appeals to the specific Texas Court of Appeals. I can see that one doing the "no blacks on jury" which the Judge has a record to dispute, the people in question saying they were biased (I have seen that a good record is like Body Cameras for Judges). Then another law firm/attorney will say the trial attorneys were inept and incompetent. Which the record will dispute.

Then, at sometime sooner or later, a "juror" will come forward saying they were "pressured" to vote for conviction.

If anyone, including you and I via our taxes, can continue to pay for someone's lawyer(s), there will be appeals. It doesn't matter whether there are substantive valid grounds, it is what is done—virtually always.

You guys aren't looking at it from the other side.

Something to think about:

https://x.com/LoneStarLegendX/.../2064674693735678257

- The defense only called 6 witnesses and rested abruptly
- The only person to speak on his behalf during the punishment phase was his mother.
- The defense didn’t even think to prepare him to testify on his own behalf

Additionally, there were no teachers, counselors, church members, etc. willing to discuss his character in court and plead for him to have another chance at life. Nobody could vouch he was really a good kid and was going to be a contributing member of society someday.

The jury heard closing statements, deliberated, found him guilty, then completed the punishment phase all in one day.

In other words, there was no way to adequately defend or humanize this animal.

I see sad face Karmelo has gone away (no need for the sympathy anymore), and is replaced with convicted murderer face Karmelo. Pretty soon, after a few Bubbas stretch him out, sad face Karmelo will be back.

Well, so much for all the phony "forgiveness" bullshit he was spouting early on. At least he finally got around to being honest.

Y'know, just as an aside, when people who say- unsolicited- to someone who has committed a grievous wrong- "I forgive you," it always comes across as phony to me. Yeah, I understand that people have different ways of coping with unfathomable grief, and claiming forgiveness when the perpetrator hasn't asked for forgiveness is somewhere on that long list of coping mechanisms, but I think forgiveness should be granted (or claim to be granted) only when it's asked for; 'the quality of mercy is not strained' and all that.

It seems phony to me, and what you hear him say in this clip, after the lecture we got from him early on, seems to bear this out.

Just my opinion, and nothing more. He's angry and he has every right to be angry and indignant. It just would have been better if he had spoken this plainly from the start, because it was damn sure justified then, just as it's justified now.
