A partially growled "Fuck off bitch" combined with a direct prolonged cold stare would have probably done the job nicely.

Effective even if you leaned in and whispered so she was the only one that could hear it.

this is no time to back down it only emboldens them. We will never get out of this unless we tell them to fuck off loud and proud

My response would have been "Madam, I am not required to wear a mask. If that bothers you, go wait somewhere else."

Just today, I had to go downtown S.F. to pick up a watch I was having regulated. When I called to see if it was ready, the lady on the phone asked me when I would be there. I asked her what does it matter. She said she'd block off a time for me so I wouldn't interact with anyone else being in the store.

I told her I was unsure of when I would be there and I was no longer participating in the covid scam.

She sputtered something as I was hanging up.

Got the watch and decided to go to another jeweler since I was there and so as I went into the next shop, the guard out front slipped up a neck cover/mask thing and as he let me in I remarked how idiotic the mask thing was. He agreed.
When I left, we had a real nice discussion about the idiocracy. He was firmly in the eyes open camp.

Good to see people waking up.

Masks are as efficient as using a cyclone fence to corral mosquitos. Follow the science.

Agree with non-escalating engagement.

However, I would love to challenge them for the science and data. As in: "As it's been 2 years of masking to no avail, let's assume you're a rational person capable of critical and logical thinking, please show me the scientific data that masks have relevant efficacy."

The viruse is the size of a wavelength of light. Nanometers.

Have Karen hold the mask up to the light and ask them if they can see photons coming through.

If you can smell organic molecules ie farts/perfume… same thing.

I would not try to get into an extended "scientific" argument with someone who likely doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground (nor really cares) in the middle of a supermarket. I would just want to make it perfectly clear I don't give a flying fuck what she thinks or wants me to do, and it would be in her best interest not to push the point.

Arguing the science or pointing out logical facts will get you absolutely nowhere but frustrated.

The question would be rather rhetorical as if the person knew and understood the science, the person wouldn’t be wearing a mask. It rather implicitly positions one as knowing something that perhaps the other does not. Regardless, one doesn’t engage with the irrational. I would just leave. But leave at least implicitly with higher ground.

They know that they can’t comply with the request. No such data exists. They wear masks only because they are told to do so. There is no other basis to do so.

My answers were absolutely a number one wise ass, here’s why:

I’m minding my own business, not Karening up to people wearing masks telling them my thoughts of how utterly brainwashed and foolish they are. Second my few friends weren’t in the store and if it were one of them I’d have recognized their voice. A younger female voice with a self important tone isn’t looking for my phone number or offering to make me a sandwich with cold cuts I’m buying. I’m tired of the self proclaimed intellectual giants that have self appointed themselves my keeper because I believe in my right to choose to wear a mask or not. Lastly if a person doesn’t figure out that I’m letting them know I have no time for them by my response,” I don’t understand English” then placing an order to the clerk in English, well then that’s what it is.

I encountered the opposite experience last week.

I went into a cell store at the local mall and was working with one of the reps who had on a mask and stood behind a sheet of plexiglass. Cool guy, BTW.
Some lady and her maybe ten yo daughter stopped at the entrance and yelled "Take off your mask! You're making yourself sick!" There were probably 15 people in the store and I was the only one not wearing the chin diaper.

It was my first experience with someone who had the nerve, or guts, to yell at a room full of people.

I did give her a wave but either she didn't see me or didn't want to use me as an example.

She moved on when one of the other reps asked her to leave.

But you know that there is tons of actual research by psychologists and sociologists showing that presenting facts to people on issues of this kind are not effective at changing their minds, right? That same research even indicates that presenting contrary facts entrench people even more deeply into their beliefs.

And if you do know of that research, then insisting that you would like to confront people with the facts is just further evidence that facts don't affect people's belief very much.

The main point being: presenting Karen with the facts about whether masks work or not will not help you. Ever. In any way.

What is a more effective strategy?

If that happened to me today I would not even acknowledge the person. I would not look at them or even act like they exist.

I am not sure you can change someone’s mind if they will not even entertain the idea that they might be wrong or at least not grasping the whole picture on something.
