They have been living in that bubble for 5 decades, blowing smoke up their own asses for so long that some of them believe their own propaganda, believing that they are all powerful. On the other hand information does filter across the DMZ both ways so not everyone is clueless. Let's hope reason prevails.

Its much more plausible that a General Turgidson (Dr.Strangelove) exits within the Nork hierarchy than in the West. I'm sure the ROKs know who's, who over the border and have a better handle on who would do what and who's too far gone to be swayed.

Like others have pointed out, the West Germans absorbing the East put them behind the 8-ball for over a decade, not just economically but, many came without any useful skills beyond domestic work or, manual labor. I've heard from other Korean friends that many of the younger generation are against reunification; citing economic factors but, more so the societal issues. As they've seen the difficulties that current escapee/defectors have in assimilating and coping in a modern world.

In theory assimilation would be easier if no one was forced to move and millions were being assimilated at the same time. Even something as simple as rational farming could make a big difference after nine months to a year. It's been a long time since we've heard stories about "Ostis" having a hard time or giving Germany in general a hard time.

Recall how our [sic] media fawned and fawned over her, the murderess, at the winter olympics?

If anyone is looking for some more behind the scenes perspectives on NK, I highly recommend the following books:

Nothing to Envy
Escape from Camp 14
Aquariums of Pyongyang

You will not be able to put any of these books down. Also, do a Google search on Kim Jong Il's Japanese chef. Some amazing stories.

One thing for sure- if he is fine, Un has to love all the internet hoopla and memes that generally indicate the world would be a happier place with him dead.

These aren't the droids you are looking for.

As I read it, Their official policy is "he is alive and well, till he isnt".

I think they don't want a mass run of people running south.

This and can you blame them? If they come out and say “yeah he’s probably worm food” it could kick off a sequence of events they’d probably rather not deal with at the moment.
