Ok... So drones can overfly our naval vessels and bases in perfect safety but we shoot down our own aircraft? Fantastic! Wait... Isnt there this thing called IFF? End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

For $900,000,000,000 a year, you too can shoot down your own aircraft and wreck your own ships. What a bargain. ——————————————— The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Psalm 14:1

Sounds like another command billet will be opening up soon. Icarus flew too close to the sun, but at least he flew.

1. F/A 18 cannot evade US AA missile, suggesting that AA missiles are superior and would protect against typical threats 2. Carrier protection against fourth-generation fighters is good, with detection, ranging, and deployment of missiles occuring as designed 3. Commmand and control, decision-making, and safeguards against friendly fire are suboptimal. ------- Trying to simplify my life...

Still alive, yes, but their careers as aviators - in terms of actually flying planes - are, if not ended, at least shortened. The ejection process is extremely hard on the human body.

I look forward to Ward Carrol's take/discussion on this incident which will likely come out in the next day or two. Icarus flew too close to the sun, but at least he flew.

WTAF is going on with the US Navy this year??? I think they’ve fired more commanders this past year than ever before. Are things that bad?

Knowing a thing or two about a thing or two |
If the F/A 18 was on a strike mission it probably went like this. They left the carrier and when they went feet dry IFF goes off and further Comms and tracking is taken over by AWACS. Post delivering their package and upon returning feet wet they probably forgot in the haste and excitement to turn on IFF. Now the "AW" the air defense commander is typically out front and closer to the shore than the rest of battle group. Not much reaction time to confirm inbond missile or friendly air craft. There was more than one of our planes lit up with 55B radars in Desert Storm before coming to their senses. Hray P226 NSWG P220 W. German P239 SAS gen2 P6 1980 W. The success of a solution usually depends upon your point of view |
I can’t wait to get more information about this. Having been the air warfare commander (AW, radio call sign “Alpha Whiskey”) for task groups I can tell you there is going to be epic levels of fail. Before reaching the AAW missile engagement zone (MEZ), which is a ring around the carrier out to maybe 80-100 miles depending, and is the responsibility of the screening surface ship's, the F18 had to clear the fighter engagements zone (FEZ) which is another defensive ring that starts 10-20 miles outside the MEZ and is the responsibility of the combat air patrol (CAP) which are sets of fighters that are under AW's control and are used to identify and engage any threats in the FEZ as directed by AW. Meanwhile, every contact being tracked or self reporting in the data net is being shared with every unit in the network. Joe sailor can zoom out his display and see every bit of information from platforms 500 miles away. And military IFF is an encrypted system that can only be read by receivers with the correct codes, it’s different from the IFF used by civilian aviation. “We truly live in a wondrous age of stupid.” - 83v45magna "I think it's important that people understand free speech doesn't mean free from consequences societally or politically or culturally." -Pranjit Kalita, founder and CIO of Birkoa Capital Management
