I wondered almost immediately about the ammunition. Supposedly it was his grandfather's rifle? I wondered if his grandpa might have had managed recoil ammo. Something like a 130gr bullet at reduced velocities? It's out there on the market, and still plenty enough to kill a deer. Would have less penetration than typical 30-06. It is not unusual at all for an Elmer Fudd type to just put any ammo he had in whatever box was available. Having seen how inept some people can be. It would not surprise me at all if some lab flunky just made an assumption about ammo just because of what box it was in. Or what box was found in the perp's house. Also, bullets can do weird and random shit. As can ammo. I was shooting some handloaded ammo for a 6 ARC gas gun the other day. 30 FPS Extreme Spread. 8 FPS Standard deviation. A buddy sent me chrono data from some M193 he tested. 125 FPS Extreme Spread. 30 FPS Standard Deviation. Now take some 30-06 ammo that was decades old, and may have been rained on, or stored in a humid garage. It could have been 3-500 FPS slower than normal if the powder was partially degraded. I have seen old actual cordite 303 British hangfire. Ammo can do weird shit. It's also possible that the shitstain nicked the edge of the roof when he fired and the bullet was partially fragmented and had shed a lot of velocity before it even hit Charlie. Odds of that are low, but it is a remote possibility. We just don't know.

IMHO a mixed box of FUDD 30-06 rounds of questionable consistency is far more likely than some kind of exploding microphone conspiracy. We as gun guys gravitate to the consistency of the ammo that we use. We forget how much stupid shit the average public does with regard to firearms. I remember mentioning once, long ago, to a guy at a public range that his vertical dispersion might have been because he was using 3 different brands of ammo, and 3 different weights of bullets, while he was trying to zero a deer rifle. He looked at me like I had three heads. I do not miss shooting at public ranges. Never again.

Well nothing in your immediate past can guide me beyond your statement. Why would you think Robinson didn’t kill Kirk? ...Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, was just a freight train coming your way...
