Tyler Robinson's father runs thriving hometown business as taxpayers face possible $10M defense bill: report

Matthew Robinson was seen shuttling between his Utah home and masonry business as taxpayers face a $10M defense bill

FoxNews link

I don't know that it's worth pasting the article here (link is above), but there seems to be an implication that Robinson's family should be footing the bill for his defense.

Tyler Robinson is an adult, not living with his parents, acting on his own. While I'm not crazy about taxpayers covering a stated "beyond $10 million" defense bill, I don't really think Matthew Robinson or his business have any bearing on, or liability to, the younger Robinson's defense costs.

And from the article comments: "A ten million dollar defense shows how screwed up our justice system is."

Politicians seem to have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around.

I agree with you.

His parents have no obligation to fund his defense. I don't think public defenders make that kind of money. Why would his defense cost that much? The State of Utah has no obligation to spend any more than they would for any other defendant.

You can say that again. And that amount isn't considering the cost of the endless appeals he is sure to go through.

Not sure if you guys caught this video, but Nate from the Valhalla VFT channel did some testing last week and released the video yesterday. Definitely worth viewing.

Thanks much for that. I hadn’t seen it, and now I can sleep tonight knowing that I won’t have to change my opinion about the incident that was based on everything I knew about terminal ballistics.
Unless, of course, I am proved wrong by an actual autopsy photo. Roll Eyes

I wonder, though, where they got the information about the specific ammunition; from the preliminary hearing (that they called the “trial,” which it wasn’t), I suppose. Too bad they didn’t measure the velocities of the rounds they fired. In any event, of the Core-Lokt loads that might have been used, the 150 grain bullet would have penetrated less than heavier choices.

Because of my previous involvement in this thread, I decided that I should follow up about this statement in the above video to make my own position clear for anyone who might still be interested (this being a firearms-related forum and all):

“And we actually also know the exact ammunition that was used.”

I’ve attempted to confirm that identification of the specific 30-06 load recovered with the rifle had been released to the public, but have thus far been unsuccessful. That doesn’t mean what their demonstration showed wasn’t valid, but I do wonder about that statement. Did they have a nonpublic source, was it an assumption based on the photographs of the rounds, or was it a sort-of way of being ironic about the lack of released information?

I believe there was testimony that a partial box of Remington Core-Lokt loads was found in the apartment.
But I think the bullet grain was an assumption based on the photographs of the rounds. 150 grain being the most "popular" load.

Thanks. That could explain it, and perhaps why it was not reported as absolute confirmation of what was found with the rifle. On the other hand it could have been enough for a YouTuber to confidently make an assertion.

From what I could find, during one of the hearings, a law enforcement officer testified they recovered Remington ammunition from Tyler Robinson's house. The casing matched the one found on the roof. I guess this doesn't definitely show that 1000% that it was cor lokt, I believe that part came from a Fenix ammunition social media post (from what I can tell).

I am sure during trial they will get into this more.

Thanks again to you and chellim1. It just shows that Internet searches do not always turn up all the information.

Having deer hunted with my Browning A-bolt 30.06, using Remington Core-Lokt loads for about the last 30 years, I would say that the Valhalla VFT video would be consistent with my own experience.
