Yeah - not sure if that is what I am watching right now. Cross country skiing, then ski's off to spring up some steps, the ski's back on for uphill climb, then skins off for downhill race ? Odd.

It is odd. And to looks like the wins are based (mostly) on how quickly one can do the transitions.

Skimo in the Olympics is "just a bit" different than what I've seen & experienced in the wild. Realistic ski mountaineering....
- Trudge uphill for a few hours.
- Battle all sorts of snow conditions -- packed, breakable crust, bumpy crap, ice, rocks, powder. Woohoo on powder, especially for the descent.
- Battle all sorts of terrain -- flats & steeps, ravines, creeks, trees, avalanche bowls. Throw in some map reading...as in "WTF am I, really"
- Take off the skis and hike on occasion....which was realistic in competition. But there ain't purdy steps out there in the wild.
- Deal with variable snow conditions & terrain on the way down. Add more rocks. A cliff or two (aka the jump). Throw in some tight trees. Maybe an avalanche chute or bowl. Get stuck in a flat area, so the skins come back on for more trudging. Since they were in the Alps, a nice crevasse here and there would be a stylish touch.

I realize it's a new event. Maybe it will grow and become more realistic.

Disappointed too learn that there are weight limits on bobsled team members. I’m thinking take the weight limits off, build a team of football linemen and there’s no stopping the USA!

Alyssa Liu is a cool call collected young lady. Her story is awesome dad is a Tianemen Square refugee wonder what her dinner time conversations were like growing up. I loved her I don’t GAF attitude.

Women’s hockey was wild. Those goalies are legit. 5 shutouts and only 2 goals allowed in 7 games ? Wow. At one point they went 330 minutes without allowing a goal. And (publicity) they all seemed to be happy to playing for team USA and sang the anthem during the medal ceremony. That’s all I ask in my Olympians.

Don’t go overseas and shit on our country when you are playing for team USA.

Hoping for an outcome identical to women's GM game.

Used to be called randonee, now just skimo or, backcountry skiing. Originally developed to allow ski travel through the mountains, users would stay at various mountain huts that are sprinkled throughout the Alps. Rapidly gaining in popularity in the US, as more backcountry huts are built and maintained. Sadly, this was recently in the news with the tragedy at in Tahoe earlier this week, as all involved doing this very activity; albeit not with the super-lightweight gear and tempo of Olympic-level athletes. Lots of trail runners do skimo in the Winter when the trails are snowed-over, as the motion and aerobic-levels are the same.

She is very enjoyable to watch. She brought an energy the other skaters didn't from start to finish.
