Growing up in a large urban area it was how long it took to get to your destination. Living in a more rural area it is often how many miles. Time vs distance.

About 18 or so miles to Wyoming, depends upon going gravel or paved.
About 50 miles or so, to Nebraska. Can get to either without encountering more than a small group of people, or avoid meeting people altogether. Now cattle, horses, deer, elk, antelope, turkey, and coyotes, they are everywhere, especially after dark!
