I don't know if I am going to make it through the next 4 years without moving out. My wife is sure that we are headed for a dictatorship/end of the world etc. with Trump at the helm. Every day I come home to "you know what Trump did today?" I have told her that I will not discuss politics - period. According to her we are going to loose our social security and our retirement savings. Trump and Musk are going to give massive tax breaks to the rich. 16 year old kids are being hired to be air traffic controllers, all our allies are pissed at us, dogs and cats are sleeping together, etc. She says she gets her information from various sources, not just left leaning ones. We are not reading the same things apparently. Everything I read is a win. I couldn't be happier. But I've got my head in the sand according to her. This could end us. 36 years down the drain. Sorry for the rant. Bob Carpe Scrotum

Man, I'm sorry to hear this. Has she always been a lefty, but Trump just exacerbated it to the point of being terminal? Q

Have you tried asking her for the basis of her conclusion? I mean something other than orange man bad. If you can get her to state the basis, you can clear it up for her. If that doesn't work, tell her to zip it and to go make a sandwich for you. .

If it's the end of the world, she should recognize you need more guns and ammo.

Maybe get her to read Sigforum for a little enlightened reading. ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.

If both of you want to stay together, there is one solution only: Don't talk about it. Just resolve to accept that there is a difference of opinion, and then simply avoid the subject. This works only if both of you agree to do this. Suggest this to her, and if she agrees, do it, and that means to stick to the agreement absolutely, every minute of every day, without fail. Forgive me (and my apologies to everyone offering advice), but any other advice you receive will fail you. You can't reason with someone who is witnessing what is happening and has decided it's all wrong. Just forget about that. The solution I have suggested is the only way.

110% agree with what Para says, talk sports, cooking, pottery anything but nothing about politics. Good luck and God Bless.

That was one of the final straws in my previous marriage. (Although not the primary factor in the divorce.) She went from being a conservative with some liberal tendencies for the first 10ish years we knew each other, to becoming a full-blown Trump-hating liberal partway through his first term. And she just. would. not. shut. up. about. it. We tried the "don't talk about politics", but she wouldn't abide. I'm not even especially political, and am a bit of a moderate who can criticize the right about stuff at times as well, but her incessant hateful bitching about Trump and Republicans was intolerable. I truly do hope your wife is more amenable to the "no politics" thing. It can work, but you both have to want it.

Para speaks the truth. I have quite a few left leaning family members and friends, with exception of one (who an intelligent conversation can be had), there is a strict no politics policy without exception. Some can't figure out what side I'm on because I refuse to discuss anything political. As Para said though, it must be adhered to by both parties or it flat out won't work.

I’ve known people like this. They are brainwashed by liberal media sources. Can you get her away from TV? It’s probably not written sources. Just turn off the TV for a month and try to have some rational, non-political conversation. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Pointless. We're saturated with this stuff. You cannot isolate a person from this kind of thing, especially when they seek it out. How would you respond to your spouse trying to keep information from you?

This post makes me grateful my wife is even more hardcore conservative than me. I don’t know how you can coexist OP without a full moratorium on anything political. Does she just not like Trump or is she a liberal?

Para's advice only works if BOTH parties agree to this and can "live, and let live". I'll go out on a limb and say that you would comply, but she very well may not see this as an opportunity to let bygones be bygones. Nature of the beast, there is so much recent history on one side being entirely unreasonable. But I feel for you. I really can't imagine a life of living in a household divided by politics in 2025. Because really, one side IS entirely wrong on their agenda. Hopefully it works out. I live in a house divided as well. I blame the smart phone, it is the devil I love my wife more than any politician or policy, so we just don’t discuss politics. I parted ways yesterday with a group chat with a bunch of car friends. I got tired of the support of illegals, CEO murderers, and Hamas. One person left the group because in my criticism of Trump's Gaza moves, I said what I think of the gazans (irredeemable murderers). I told them to invite them back and I'd leave because I'm the most recent additional and all but one align with the left. Sucks, it used to be about cars, memes, friendship, and mutual support. Recently it became more political and I finally got tired keeping my mouth shut. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

My apologies, Bob. My first replies were a bit smug. I took them as just a rant and not serious. I'm not sure you would then want my advice but so take it w/ a grain of salt. I would suggest you try to ride it out. 36 yrs. When it becomes apparent to her that it's not the end of the world as time passes, she may change her stance.

If she thinks you have your head in the sand and do not recognize the "existential threat" that Trump represents to her, how much longer until she identifies you as part of the problem too? It's a tough situation you're in and I certainly don' envy you. I am lucky that my wife of 34 years has actually become more of a Trump supporter in the years since his first term.
