This just somehow hit me wrong. Retired USAF 0-6 here, with 30 years of those "thousands" behind me, and attended flag officer Charm School with the later-to-be USN Surgeon General. The final six of those 30 years were in the Pentagon, where I served on the Crisis Action Team (CAT) next door to Checkmate, immediately post-9/11, walking over the bodies of 125 of my dead friends for a year while they patched the hole, after which the Air Force and I parted company, honorably and with mutual respect as I pursued another calling. And I served under and with quite a few of those flag positions, from 4 stars on down during my career, so I have some direct knowledge of those thousands of years of experience, good and bad. And this is my t-shirt departing the Pentagon, presented to all of us who worked there by the COS and the USAF PA as we closed down the CAT. It's hanging in my office, above one of the first pieces struck from the Berlin Wall on my desk, where I always knew it would be, near the folded flag presented to my mother at my father's military funeral as a career Naval officer. Those are my creds, real, not Internet.

Pete Hegseth is exactly the man they need, at exactly the right place, at exactly the right time. Doing exactly the right thing. That's my well-considered opinion, jumping off from the above, and the opinion of many of my former brothers and sisters-in-arms. Yours could certainly be different, and you're entitled to it. But it would be interesting to see your t-shirt.

By this logic, most Secwar/defs AND Presidents have no business telling the military brass what to do either. Think, man.

The only issue that I have is with AR 670-1 and the facial hair standards. I get the no beards thing, and I'm good with that as you can't get a good seal on a mask. However, the mustache standards are, and have always been, ridiculous. Nothing past the corners of the mouth. Really?

Many guys with small mouths walk around looking like Hitler. Let the mustaches go! Long live the mustache! Pencil thin? Go for it. Sam Elliot? Rock it and be proud!

Having been dubious about Hegseth at the beginning, I now consider this to have been an inspired choice by President Trump. One of many, actually.

An amazing speech and long over due.

But all the crying by the left on the socials supporting fat and non performing service members is giving me pure joy!

Service members themselves are coming out in droves crying, and it's truly glorious. More and more of this winning please!

You ever notice that when people 'out themselves' it's as if their comments represent some sort of alternate (opposite?) and completely nonsensical reality.

On Tuesday, SECDEF tells all the assembled flag officers that everyone - including generals/admirals - will be held to PT standards, and all service members will be required to do PT every duty day.

On Wednesday, less than 24 hours later, here's USSOCOM's command staff at 0 dark thirty, with the commanding general leading by example:

quote:
USSOCOM Headquarters and all SOF Command Teams joined Gen. Bryan Fenton and Command Sgt. Maj. “AJ” Krogman for a Command Run.

In special operations, fitness and discipline are not optional – they are foundational to our strength, and demonstrate the uncompromising standards of our Force.

Woke ideas filtered into the military through political appointees in top positions in previous administrations, making those ideas policy. Some military personnel took on the DEI mantle because they were told to, or because they got enthused about it, or whatever. No one on active duty would be able to ignore what was policy, so according to its own logic it sort of started to take over.

It is entirely possible - even likely - that the vast majority senior officers who heard Hegseth speak on Tuesday will enthusiastically enforce the new policies on appearance and fitness. (Standby for some court cases from outside interest groups, though).

There have been enclaves of high standards and lethality in the military throughout recent times, however. Many people have been keeping the faith.

The Administration now has to buy some more modern airplanes (B52's first flew in 1952, and F15's first flew in 1972), a lot more missiles (turns out all types get consumed quickly in modern warfare), some decent new ships (what a mess that has been), etc., to give the military some more modern tools.

Cyberiad said "giving a stupid lecture to officers".
A lecture implies a learning environment where new knowledge is being trotted out to tyros.

As I listened to Pete I thought that he was delivering a 250 year old tradition: "Passing the Word". And the Word was good and all gathered together must go forth and pass The Word further. If there were any questions somebody should be talking to the chaplain by now.

P.S. OOH RAH!
