It's worse than that. Italy uses euros. At current exchange rate and if my math isn't off, €9.23 is ~$10.70.

Lisbon Portugal was around the same price a few weeks back. Crazy.

It's seemingly helped calm the GD speculators who made the crude oil price worse. I'm an engineer so I dislike inefficiency and them bastards make for an inefficient market as they have no intention of taking possession of crude oil.

Next, the realities of logistics will kick in:
  • it's 32 days transit time for a Suezmax supertank to go from Strait of Hormuz to Houston (aka the refining hub of North America). That's just crude arriving at the dock, but it still needs to be refined into gasoline/diesel and transported to market.
  • to minimize price impacts from high crude prices, companies drew down US crude inventories (both private inventory and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve) to the lowest they've been in a several years. IMO, inventories are uncomfortably low.

It's officially hurricane season (fortunately several standard deviations from peak hurricane season) and we're pretty damn vulnerable at our current inventory level. Hopefully, none hit the Gulf of America for 60ish days so crude inventories can be rebuilt. I won't speculate on price impacts of a hurricane hitting the GoA in next 60 days.

Paid $4.26 for diesel today. That is over a dollar a gallon less than what I paid a few weeks back.

Anyone remember the “replacement cost” lie? You know. The one where the gas in the ground at your local station had to go up TODAY because of replacement cost? Now, we are seeing it was a lie all along. Replacement cost is lower, and now the excuses start to cover up that it was never about replacement cost.

Tell me again how this game isn’t rigged.

Yeah isn’t kind of them to double the price and then “do us a favor” to make us appreciate being boned by taking half of that way.

We’re all just too angry to see it. That fuel in the ground had to skyrocket despite the costs associated with it already being paid. And it won’t return to where it was until the price hurts re-election chances. And mysteriously it will drop back around election time.

I filled up my Kawasaki Z125 Pro tonight. It was indicating 1/2 a tank of gas but I think I had a little over half a tank left. I think it was $4.40 a gallon or something close to that.

This was the cost of topping off with 90 octane ethanol free. Big Grin

$3.50 today in cental Iowa today but there's a catch. Iowa law now says all gas stations must offer E15 (15% ethanol). Many stations with only two tanks now sell only E15 and E10 premium. If your car isn't rated to run that much ethanol, you need to buy premium or find a station with more options.
