^ Exactly. Smile

And Venezuela has all that Oil, and their government is out of its mind and a legitimate problem case for our interests. Imagine if we just took that Oil for ourselves (and their domestic needs). They have more reserves than Saudi Arabia.

quote:
In 2010 Venezuela reportedly produced 3.1 millions barrels of oil daily and exporting 2.4 million of those barrels per day. Such oils exports brought in $61 billion for Venezuela. When 2015 ended, Venezuela's confirmed oil reserves were estimated to be around 300.9 billion barrels in total

Or, we could just start drilling off of their coast. If they pitch a fit, we'll just fire-bomb Caracas. Fuck 'em.

Ok. You've beat me down. We take Mexico. But no farther. It'll be easier to build the wall at the bottom of Mexico than the top. Cool

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

That's why I said we should take it all the way down to the Panama Canal and beyond.

The Canal *is* the wall, at least until we eventually absorb Brazil and Argentina. Smile

No wall to build, all that new coastline, hundreds of miles of it, all that Oil, Silver, etc...

We'd all be better off, except their cartels and corrupt politicians.

And being able to give the Saudis the middle finger is just an added bonus.

Would we have even bothered back in 1990 if we owned Venezuela's oil?

Honestly, it's a bit surprising it hasn't happened already. How is colonialization and expansion now any worse than it ever was? If anything, it would be way better today, we're kinder and gentler, there are iPhones everywhere, it's not like we're looking to build concentration camps or ovens, we'd legitimately bring infrastructure, technology, etc, their own people can be trained to work the jobs, etc. How much love do the average citizens of those countries really have for their corrupt and inefficient governments?

We suck sometimes, no doubt, but almost everything about here is better than in everyone of those countries (Canada excepted). And we've already, somewhat covertly, been in the Regime Change business for decades or more anyway. Why keep half-assing it, and letting their crooks and otherwise make all that money and squander all those resources. Billions upon billions every year, lost. There's room for dozens of resorts between here and there, bigger and better ports, Naval bases...

All he fun and beauty of Cancun or wherever with the infrastructure and security of the US? The tourism alone, just from other North Americans, would be enormous, and in many ways at the expense of other overseas places. More winning.!

No.

We need to push 10 miles into Mexico. Establish a DMZ that would make Korea wince. Relocate all homesteads that are in the exclusion zone. SOUTH of the ten mile line. Land mines work. Trust me.

Make the ten miles a "no mans land".

I'm talking armored cars and tanks and jeeps and rigs of every size. I even want a bear in the air.

We can call it the "De Mexican Zone"

Nosirree bob. We need a few hundred million more problems?

Ignoring the ethical fail of involuntary annexation, it is far better for us to trade with them than to own them. We ship them paper (dollars) and they ship us stuff. What's not to like?

And they get to deal with the social problems, the crime, etc. We aren't having much luck with that here on our own.

Being weary of the election sound-and-fury, I won't dwell on the obvious results of adding that populace into our blue-red mix, just to point out that if they got to vote, they'd tip the balance and we'd probably end up being a colony of theirs. Wink

Yeah, well, it wasn't the Greeks' fault. They got screwed the same way by the Egyptians.

Ah, one, they still remember that and still don't like it, from the bad ol' days. Two, as Columbus' crew discovered, you never know what you'll find if you go rooting around in there.

Just to make sure you realize, right up against the border, Mexico has multiple cities of hundreds of thousands of people, some with million of people. We're not talking sparsely populated rural areas.

To make it more interesting, there's a lot of American investment in these cities. Matamoros is known for having factories of American companies (yes, I know, another issue.)

So even if we took it over, flattening it into a now mans land really isn't an option.
