I never would have thought my first litre bike would be a R1. Yamaha was not exactly my favorite of the big four. I always thought my first litre bike would be a Suzuki or a Honda.

My friend who usually specializes in rare two strokes had a R1 in need some TLC.

I'm looking foreword to experienceing what 150 hp feels like.

Yamaha is numero uno today in sportbikes.

Nothing wrong with the first R-1's. I had a couple. Competent for that time period. But you will really miss what comes on a modern liter bike in terms of electronics. Buy good tires and behave and it will be enjoyable.

Uncomfortable, and stupid fast.

Moderation of the right wrist twist will solve most of those problems. Not all but most.

Mark71, I hear ya on the RC. As a huge Honda and 90° twin fan the RC51 is a motorcycle I will absolutely have in my garage in the future. I just gotta quit buying two strokes and project bikes and find a clean low mile example.

This R1 ain't much to look at now. It's previous owner dropped it and messed up the lower fairings so I got it for a steal. I am probably going to make it a street fighter or just ride it for a bit as it is now since it's pretty much already a street fighter.

Those first R1's will be a classic someday soon. I f the frame isn't too buggered you can always replace fairing.

Is it a blue one or a red/white one?

My take was to always assume that they were actively trying to hit you and plan and ride accordingly.

Kev, It is red & white. Thankfully the frame did not sustain any damage.

Kev, It would look like this if I fixed the fairings. These first gen R1 bikes actually look pretty good considering they are almost 18 years old.

A friend had a 2001, the midrange torque was awesome. I've ridden much faster bikes, but none felt as wild - new bikes are faster and more controlled than ever.

I think that the red/white looks best on that bike. Keep us updated on the fix and how it rides.

Time for a restoration!

If I can easily find OEM factory fairings then yeah I will restore it back to original.

This R1 has a cool looking frame so I do plan on riding it as a naked bike/ streetfighter for a little while.
