Since start of wuflu my wife has lost 35lbs and I've lost 25lbs by eating anything we want but limiting the hours we eat. Big meal is 1 or 2 pm, fast until then, and stop eating at 6 or 7 pm. We both limit sugar and we eat a lot of protein, steaks, pot roast, chicken breast, bacon, black beans, western omelets, big salads, etc.

I can also recommend the Pure Protein bars for a supplement/protein snack. I get them on Amazon. The Chocolate Deluxe variety is the best ratio of high protein to low salt of the protein bars I've looked at so far. 180 calories each, 13 net carbs, 21 grams of protein, 90mg of sodium. That's less than half the sodium of most of the bars I've looked at, and nearly twice the protein on average. Tastes like a chewy cholate bar.

Another great option I've integrated into my diet the last months or so is Fairlife Chocolate "Nutrition Shake." 150 calories, 2g sugar, 3 net carbs, 30g protein and 230mg sodium. 11.5oz drink. Better than Muscle Milk and all that stuff because there isn't a layer of settled sludge on the bottom that won't mix back in no matter how much you shake it, tastes like chocolate milk.

For powders you can mix in or add to stuff, Combat brand at Costco (big black bags) is pretty good stuff, don't have the info on hand. Six Star is 62g of protein(!!) for two scoops, but good gravy that stuff gives me deadly gas. In a blender with a banana and milk, and it makes for a quick and easy breakfast I can drink on the way to work.

Progress soup is another satisfying/filling meal for me. Lots of varieties with good flavors.

One can is considered two “servings”, but the servings are 80-120 calories each depending on which variety so one 18.5 oz can is only 160-240 calories.

^^^^^^ There's a lot of Sodium in those cans.

And when you read the list of ingredients, what the heck are all those added things, and why are they in there?

I like to make my own soups, it can be surprisingly quick and easy. I learned this when I had a root canal and my Niece made me home made soup. It was delicious and quickly made.

Get some Sodium Free Chicken Broth, you can certainly get it at Wallymart in the Swanson brand, in a carton instead of a box. Any grocery should stock this. There are other brands. You can also get turkey broth, beef or vegetable broth too.

Put it in a pot on the stove top and start the heating up process.

Add some frozen mixed vegetables or whatever vegetables you want. Whatever you want, chop it up: fresh celery onion potato carrot mushrooms, bok choy, etc etc etc. Whatever you want.

Add your choice of meat, or go meat free if you want. This is a great way to use up a Rotisserie Chicken, or left over Ribs or Bacon, etc.

Add the spices you like: salt pepper garlic onion, etc.

Pasta. Try to go with the smaller pieces, or chop up some larger pieces, cooking them separately to make this easier.

Many larger grocers, and ethnic grocers, sell small packages containing very small pieces of Pasta. My grocer does, they're 3 for a Dollar.

You can do this, start to finish, in 20 minutes or so, and you can make a large-ish pot and have leftovers.

That is a good idea OkCGene. Are you adding water or just using the broth as stock?

Another question for you guys. I am kind of dialed in on lunch and snacks to this point. Also we have dinner set also.

For breakfast I usually have a couple of eggs. Either an omelette or scrambled. Maybe a bit of ham or bacon mixed in with some cheddar cheese.

The only other thing I have been eating for breakfast is is one piece of toast and peanut butter. But not on the days I eat the egg's.

Is eating a couple egg's a day on a keto type diet a good thing?

^^^^^^^^ I adjust the broth to taste, sometimes adding water.

If you boil a chicken you’ll have lots of broth as well as plenty of chicken to use.

I don't know much about Keto, but eggs are less than 1 carb, lots of protein and about 80 calories each (large)

Well, I’ve been on most of the diets out there. 285 in February. Had pretty much given up on losing weight. Read some of the intermediate fasting threads here, and said “what do I have to lose”?
I’m now 243, usually eat between noon and six pm. Cut out all suger, zero calorie sweeteners, booze, and backed way off on simple carbs.
I eat steak (just finished a fine ribeye), chicken Brest and thighs, salads, potatoes sparingly, sweet potato sparingly, cheeses, cottage cheeses, nuts, and occasionally popcorn!
If it says fat free, I stay away! Fat is where it’s at!I never imagined I could eat fat and lose weight.
There are times between 7am and noon where I have hunger pains, but manageable. Other than that, I don’t count calories and eat till full. Hoping I can drop below 230 by October. Hawaii trip planned.

A couple of ideas for this thread:

I discovered quinoa a few months ago. It makes a tasty, nutritious, and low calorie meal that satisfies the appetite (lots of fiber). I steam mine, making it tender with no free water. I add freshly ground pepper, garlic butter, and a little seasoning salt. Quinoa has all of the essential amino acids necessary for a complete protein.

Snacks – I don’t snack much but when I do, it’s rolled oats. Very nutritious, providing lots of fiber – both soluble and insoluble. I eat rolled oats dry. That way they have a nut-like flavor that I don’t find in porridge.

I consider refined sugar to be poisonous. The only candy that I eat is Ghirardelli 100% cacao.

Fruit juice: Tomato. The tastiest of all (to me), and low calorie too.

Serious about crackers

Same, as far as keto goes. I don’t think you can go wrong with that breakfast, unless you have cholesterol issues. I love eggs as a cheap, easy source of protein. Two or three for breakfast and a piece of whole grain of multigrain toast or two for a sandwich does me well. I skip salt, add fresh ground pepper and maybe a bit of crushed scotch bonnet or habanero sauce.

Tomato juice is good stuff, just keep an eye on the sodium content. It can get pretty high.

I don't know if this diet has a name...

My kids teacher, a secretary at work also, lost a lot of weight with this method. Six very small snacks spaced throughout the day and one normal meal at noon.

They both complained of having trouble eating so often. The last snack was often skipped.

The said their stomach seemed to shrink. Never felt hungry. Ate less since they felt full sooner.

Eggs are great for keto. But if you eat toast you aren’t doing keto. If your peanut butter has sugar you aren’t doing keto. The key to keto is that your body gets fat adapted. Even small amounts of carbs now and then will throw you out of ketosis. You should be less than 50 grams of carbs per day and ideally less than 30. Intermittent fasting is also a great help to keto.

Apart from that if you are on keto cholesterol will be fine even if you eat tons of fatty meat and egg yolks. The idea that fatty foods cause high cholesterol is not accurate.

These go to eleven.

I probably shouldn't have to say this, but it feels like it should be said anyway, and that's talk to your doctor before trying keto. My best friend had some problems I won't get into, but it put him in the hospital, and I was flatly told not to try keto because of some health problems I have. It is not for everyone, especially if you have pancreas, liver, thyroid, gallbladder issues, or especially diabetes. Ketoacidosis can kill you. Keto is definitely not for everyone. I actually had a bit of an argument with my doctor about carbs based on some "research" I did online and was told that if I like living, I'll eat some fucking carbs.

If you can safely do keto and it works for you, that's great. However, there are ways to eat healthy and safely that do involve carbs in your diet. I'm living proof that you don't have to completely cut them out to get healthy and/or lose a shit-ton of weight.

I don't disagree with you that many diet plans can work. But I'm guessing perhaps your friend had Type 1 diabetes. A healthy person on keto diet should not develop keto acidosis because their body can produce insulin to keep ketones in control.

As for type 2 diabetes, a keto diet can basically cure it. By all means talk to a doctor. But in my situation the doctor wanted to put me on meds and said I could not cure my pre-diabetes with diet because I'm over 50 and just deal with it and take the pills. Not for me. I have yet to find a doctor that is willing to help with lifestyle changes to improve my health. I've done keto for about 6 months with one break during the holidays. I cured my blood pressure, high cholesterol and pre-diabetes.

I think with other types of diets portion control is important. I find that very difficult when I'm eating carbs. I just want more and more, which along with my other issues, is a sign of insulin resistance. Somehow on keto I'm able to eat one meal a day. I cheat occasionally with some popcorn and a movie.

These go to eleven.

A fair guess, but no. As it turns out, there’s more than a few health issues that make keto dangerous.

I am not doing keto persae. But using "some" of the keto conceps.

As I mentioned. I am eating what we have always had for dinner (1/2 portion) from previous amounts. My wife is an excellent cook. Had some venison with three small roasted red potatoes with mushroom's and onions last night, excellent. Smile

I just started KETO a few weeks ago.
Not because I am overweight ~ at 165/5'11 is not fat.
I am a bit over 60 too.

I started after searching for a better diet for: more energy, lose a tad of belly fat, marginal but not critical BP and Cholesterol.

My Primary Doctor retired after 50 years and had me on a BP med and a Statin.
They did help but I want off them.
Went to a new Primary (wife picked out because of reviews, yada yada).
She was young and all she was mostly just selling pharmaceuticals.
Tried to sell me every vaccine known to man.
Wanted to put me back on Statins. I refuse.
Enough!

Started looking at diet and more exercise.
You would think modern medical genius's would consider these factors?

KETO seemed to make sense to me ~ technically.
Goals is to lower Cholesterol ~ although I expect (it is normal) LDL to raise HDL and lower Triglycerides.

Started off and gradually got more disciplined on less carbs.

So far ~ I do have more energy and have lost a few lbs but that is not the goal.
Only one day of KETO flu.

My diet is lots of eggs, bacon, avocados, nuts, cheese, steak, other meats.
I try to do some exercise everyday too from walks, golf, weights, treadmill.
I used to hit the gym but the Wu Flu cause my gym to close and haven't rejoined yet.

What is so hard is refraining from grains ... pasta, pizza, bread and chips.
Also limited veggies and no fruit.
Never really had a sugar problem.
Plan to test Cholesterol every 60-90 days to monitor.

But overall this seems to make sense to me and asking your Doctor results may vary IF they are not KETO or nutritionally trained.
Seems all they want to do now days are sell drugs.

PS... a calorie-counter app is critical to keep up with this.
I use Nutrition-IX ~ there may be others.

Sources of some good info:

Dr. Eric Berg

and my favorites:

Dr. Ken Berry

Thomas DeLauer

There are others but these are some of the best most common sense info.

Anybody else with KETO success?

I don't follow a "diet" per se, but I generally eat healthy. More about counting calories, eating fresh foods, and cooking with fresh ingredients, rather than subscribing to an "XYZ is bad and should be avoided" diet.

For lunches and dinners, I eat a lot of farm fresh eggs in various dishes. I also cook a lot of chicken breast and vegetable meals. I rarely eat prepackaged meals, as those tend to be loaded with unnecessary excess preservatives, and are also generally significantly more expensive than buying ingredients and making your own stuff.

For breakfast, I usually have a protein shake consisting of coffee, protein powder, and almond milk on most days, but I've gotten really tired of those lately. So I've switched over to meal-prepping several days worth of baked protein oatmeal instead. Then I just toss a serving into the microwave for a couple minutes while my coffee is brewing, and have hot coffee and breakfast available within a few minutes.

For example: https://mealprepmanual.com/apple-pie-baked-oatmeal/ or https://mealprepmanual.com/baked-peach-oatmeal/
