Rather than add it to an existing thread I thought it would be helpful start a thread on foods to eat as many of us are trying to get to a health weight and stay there. Let's not turn this thread in to another weight loss thread. Also not into a dinner planning thread. Lets try to simply discuss foods that are easily kept on hand to eat a low carb type lifestyle. Many do not do the app thing on our phones or want to get into a measure everything gig. We just want to control our intake and eat healthy foods and enjoy a normalish dinner nightly. A lot us know that things like potato's, pasta, bread, beer, chips, juices, candy, treats, most fruits and a lot veggies, etc are no no's. But what can we eat? Here are a few things I am eating. A couple eggs, sometimes with a bit of cheese or ham or bacon mixed in. a couple of pieces of salami, deli type ham or turkey and one thin slice of cheese. A normal dinner (1/2 portion) from previous consumption. Drinking more water. Snacks. a mix of cashews, almonds and raisins. (small portion) cottage cheese Berries olives avocado Please add items that will help those of us that don't have a lot of experience or knowledge about this. Thanks all. Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts. I try to keep several on hand, already cooked, in the refrigerator so that I can put something in my stomach when I feel quite hungry. If they are thick, filet them down to a thinner thickness. Others you can pound down with a meat hammer, plate, etc. Try to keep them at a uniform size and thickness. 4-5 ounces each. I either grill them or cook them in my Breville Smart Grill or a George Foreman type grill. No frying in oil. I get bored with "diet" foods so spices are important to keep it interesting. Keep oranges and apples on hand. No bananas. An apple and an orange a day is good for you. One in the morning, one in the evening. I keep fish in the freezer at all times. I limit those fish to Halibut, Salmon, Sea Bass, Cod, and sometimes Tilapia. They defrost quickly and cook quickly. I keep some broccoli on hand in the fridge, already cooked. I cook enough at one time to last a few days. (It is filling on the stomach, easing the hunger pangs and is good Roughage/Fiber. Almonds. Raw and unsalted. A scant handful once a day only. You'll need to limit the cottage cheese and avocado to a small portion once a week, they are a higher caloric value. .

Avocado are good, but they don't have a long shelf life. Refrigeration helps. The two best things for me are frozen chicken and frozen broccoli. Try to eat cruciferous vegetables if you can. For shelf stable, I like King Oscar's sardines. Larger fish have higher levels of mercury.

Bananas Apples Milk Kefir (Greek or baked style) Yogurt (not low fat) Unsalted or raw almonds and cashews Romaine lettuce Yellow squash Zucchini Fresh spinach Hard cheeses Beans - any kind, but if canned, rinse to get rid of excess salt More yogurt No sugar I eat some or all of these almost every day, and I eat my fill. Salads, I use romaine and spinach as a base and add grape tomatoes, canned but rinsed black olives, shredded or grated Parmesan and unsalted pumpkin seeds and whatever else looks good, but often no more than that. Olive oil and vinegar with fresh ground pepper on top, the pre-made dressings are loaded with salt and often sugar. Yogurt as a snack or dessert, preferably full fat (your body needs fats and the low fat varieties are much higher in salt, in fact, that seems to be the case with dairy all across the board), and low sugar - often plain Greek with frozen fruit mixes added in, or a little bit of honey with unsalted nuts (honey and pistachios is awesome). I go easy on red meat, altogether avoiding it for weeks on end, but occasionally, I’ll get a hankering and buy some steaks. I had a one pound NY strip for lunch a couple weeks ago. Pork or chicken otherwise. You can’t eat too much in terms of vegetables - I’ll often cut a whole squash or zucchini in half the long way, grind some fresh black pepper over each half and throw them in the toaster over for just long enough to warm the open sides, then devour. ______________________________________________ “There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too.”

smudge, Bannas, nope. Milk. High in sugar. Beans (legumes) nope. Alot of veggies are high in carbs too. None are great for low carb. Not saying they are not good food. Just not great for weight loss according to my finding. But I could be wrong. Along the lines of chicken and salmon. Pork loin is also a good snack or main component to a meal I believe. Another snack is popcorn in moderation. The brand skinny popcorn that costco sell's is pretty "skinny" I believe for a snack. Also Tuna with a little mayo can be a good lunch item. This message has been edited. Last edited by: old rugged cross, "Practice like you want to play in the game"

Ideally, only about 10% of your calories should be from carbs or sugar. Oil/fats are good for you, within reason. Try to eat most of your food in the morning or middle of the day. Food eaten at night typically is stored as fat. If you have a light breakfast, and then are starving by dinner time, you are doing things backwards. Almost impossible to lose weight when eating late at night. -c1steve

Steve. If eating at 6pm and going to bed at 11 pm Is that not sufficient time to burn some calories off. I could understand if eating dinner later. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

Homemade kimchee practically changes my life. Cuts down on the bathroom time by 1000X. I always use napa cabbage, but from there...whatever is on sale that doesn't look rotten. Carrots, white cabbage, kale, bokchoy, etc. Throw it all in with some gokachuru spice... and in 3 weeks I've got a nightly snack that I enjoy and sets my guts right. I've also started pickling eggs. I do a beet/asian blend of spices, and eat 2 in a bowl of ramen with some fresh shredded cabbage. I have carrots and onions in my pickle brine, so I grab a few of those and toss in the ramen. I'm often full enough from that at lunch that I skip dinner. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The trouble with our Liberal friends...is not that they're ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so." Still finding my way |
I have a deep freeze and keep lots of frozen chicken breasts, cod fillets, and frozen veggies in steamer bags. Those are my staples. I usually shop once a week and pick up a big bag of mixed greens for salads and any other fresh produce.

A lot of the opinions here on certain foods depend on the diet plan you are following. There are healthy foods that are not low carb. You have to watch calories a bit more if you follow that path. The foods mentioned by old rugged cross are more on the keto path. In that case, some of the people mentioning lean meats aren't going in the right direction. Fats are important on the keto diet and too many lean proteins can be a problem. Apart from that the time of day you eat doesn't matter. The idea that you don't burn calories while sleeping is a myth. If you give your body time to burn calories, it doesn't matter when you eat as long as you don't eat all day and night. As to the topic, for snacks I keep cheese and nuts. The nuts can be tough because they are calorie dense and addicting. Cheese is filling and just a little satisfies my cravings. For meals: Salad stuff, fatty meat, green veggies of all kinds and that's about all I eat. These go to eleven.

Moderation. I eat mainly meats and vegetables. But, I have occasional sweets. “Healthy” foods are mainly the foods on the outer isles of a grocery store. As long as your meals are not carb laden, most of your meals aren’t “bad”.
