One can easily predict what will happen should the food supply be interrupted indefinitely. Watch what happened in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Even law enforcement officers looted……..in uniform. That was a one week disaster. Think of what people would be willing to do if they have hungry babies at home and the shelves at the store are empty. Some people think they’ll just grab their rifle and go hunting. That’ll do…..for about a month. Because everyone else will be doing the same thing. You won’t find game for miles in the woods if at all. The easiest thing to do is to raid the neighborhoods. And with hungry kids at home, even the honest will do what they must in desperation. In densely populated areas without the survival skills of even a century ago, there will be chaos and mayhem. Past is prologue. We’ve seen hints of what’s possible before. Do I expect it to happen? I hope it doesn’t, but I never thought I’d see panic buying nationwide like I did during the ramifications of early covid either. Frankly, there’s a lot Ive seen lately I. Ever thought I’d see in this country. So, I examine what’s possible and prepare what I can. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

Goofy as it may sound, the first couple of seasons of The Walking Dead does a good job of showing the progression from hunkering down to foraging vending machines and empty homes to producing your own food. Ignoring the whole zombie part of the plot, the early seasons seem like a good warning of what we might expect (to include dangerous desperate hungry humans).

Of note in those apocalyptic books and shows there’s always the initial event but the real threat is the remaining population in competition for power and resources. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

Back just before 1/1/2000 in a conversation about Y2K preps, a coworker quipped he wasn't worried because "My neighbors are all Mormons, and I've got guns". It was funny given where we live and who he is, but it is instructive. We keep our preps totally private. I know which neighbors are likely completely unprepared (aside from massive fine wine and expensive bourbon collections). I know which neighbors we can partner with for mutual security.

And Mormons don’t have guns—? Now I’m curious and it’s a serious question. I know a little about LDS doctrine and practices, and am not aware of any strictures against owning firearms. I obviously could be wrong, but given the church’s support of being generally prepared for emergencies and, admittedly long ago, their history of being subjected to hostility and violence would, it seems, make them more in favor of self-defense than most groups. “I don’t want some ‘gun nut’ training my officers [about firearms].” — Unidentified chief of an American police department. “I can’t give you brains, but I can give you a diploma.” — The Wizard of Oz This life is a drill. It is only a drill. If it had been a real life, you would have been given instructions about where to go and what to do.

Mormons, at least the ones in my area, are prepared at a level that includes a written organizational and logistical manual. Quite thick by the way, from what I'm told. There is another group, veterans only types, that will likely form the other most powerful force after I no longer want to be alive. Best of luck to both of them.

Yeah, it was intentional multi-level humor. The Mormons are indeed well prepared for survival, including being well armed. Whether it be crop failure, civil war, or a week without power, they strive for comprehensive preparation. The history of the Mormons is full of persecution and self sufficiency. They even stood off the US Army for a while. They know that weather can bring a terrible harvest. They were pioneers, and many established small very remote settlements. In short, the last home I would try to raid would be a Mormon home.

The disaster that I expect is a shortage or ammo panic , again . I don't expect any riots or civil unrest near me .

When we lived in a regular neighborhood, we were very well organized. Though we aren't LDS, we were included in the community preparations. There was a color card system to indicate if the occupants needed help, or had a communicable disease, or there were deceased inside. During an emergency, put the applicable card in the window to speed the assessment of the community. Every home voluntarily indicated what emergency equipment they might own (chainsaw, rescue equipment, etc) and any specific skills (medical, construction, electrician, etc). Every Valentine's Day there was a full community get together which included a meal prepared from food storage using field kitchen equipment. The organization was very impressive.

All blustering aside, the truth of the matter is that many if not most will be dead within 30-180 days. Once the prescription meds run out that currently keep many of their quality of life up, things like hypertension and diabetes will take them. All the ammo in the world won’t save you from 50-60 years worth of poor living.

Concur. And I haven't found a good way to stockpile meds yet. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but it seems unless you're sleeping with the pharmacist, then taking your chances on the dark web is about your only option.

My original question has been perverted from its directness and simplicity. I asked about ammunition stockpiles and now we're killing off the population for the SIN AND SLOTH of being diabetic or having high blood pressure. Here's a newsflash for all you guys- you don't need to be in poor health to have diabetes and some hypertension is hereditary. You might want to do a bit of research. FEW scenarios of emergencies would include disruptions of normal supply lines. How many such emergencies can you name in the 250 year existence of this nation? On the other hand, YOUR GOVERNMENT just cut off THIRTY PERCENT of the supply of 5.56 ammunition in this country. The time to tend to matters of a reduced supply of anything, is BEFORE those constrictions occur or at least before they become acute. I've pointed it out and made it apparent in this forum and that's all I can do. Those of you who want to deride my efforts can go take a long wake off a short pier.
