This is good advice. Many pilsners will fit into the decription you gave. Japanese beers, and most American factory beer (like Budweiser, Miller, etc.) have too much rice in the grain bill, which robs them of flavor. And they are brewed to be bland - and have almost no hops flavor either. Of course, what I forget is that a lot of people like that. If that is your style, get Budweiser. That is the one I get when I get a very light flavored American style lager. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything. | |||

And are heavily carbonated, which masks the flavor even more. And are generally kept by most establishments at nearly freezing and/or are served in a frozen mug, which further robs a beer of its flavor. | |||

I was going to suggest wheat beers also. However if you want a clean crisp taste you may want to stay away from the German and Belgian wheat’s. Those beers can sometimes have a funky taste to them. Not all of them but I couldn’t tell you what brands to stay away from. I would go with an American wheat beer. A lot of the summer seasonals are wheat beers. Apart from that any of the better known Brewers have a good summer Ales every year. Sam summer is a good choice. These go to eleven. | |||

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’ve had many of the ones mentioned but not in some time. Straubs (St Mary) has my attention. Originally from PA myself, I’ve seen them, never had one. Now to get one! Not sure how I’d like the rice lager of the Japanese beers but Kirin Ichiban may work. Been awhile since I’ve had the Canadians but, yeah, from what I remember a Labatt’s Blue or the Molson Canadian would fit the bill. I’ll take that suggestion under advisement. The Czech beers are easy drinking and good and I could put down more than a few Krusovices (light or dark) in an afternoon. Do not care for the Hefeweizen beers in general and I’m confident that the Yuengling made in PA is better than the stuff I get from the brewery here in Tampa. Rolling Rock was a good beer till they were sold to Anheuser in 2006 and closed the Latrobe Brewery in western PA. Moved production to NJ. I noticed a difference in quality immediately, a real shame. | |||

Yes, Pilsner Urquell is what you are looking for. As a backup, rty Augustiner Brau, or St. Pauli Girl, Tuborg might also fit the bill. If you are in an area with few brands from which to choose, Heinekin is almost always available. | |||

If you get Yuengling, make sure it’s in the cans. The green bottles make it taste like Budwater. Any true to style Helles lager or pilsner will fit the bill also. Modelo is a good, widely available choice. Most Mexican lagers are German style and will get you the flavor/character you’re looking for. Lots of grocery stores have a make your own 6 pack section now and craft stores almost always offer singles. If you have any in your area, go in and talk to the person working the counter. Tell them what you’re looking for and pick up a few things to try. | |||
