Damn, I had kind of forgotten all about this. I actually live about 15 minutes from where this shit show will go down if the verdict does not come out the way some folks want it to come out.

Tonight everything in the safe is getting loaded up, checking the generator for gas, and hoping for the best. Fortunately, we are kind of secluded, and the neighbors I do have are the type of neighbors that think exactly like we think. This would definitely be the wrong neighborhood to try some stupid shit in. The guy three doors down from me is a former army sniper, I do not exaggerate when I tell you that if Minneapolis blows up, he will be taking a watch from his roof.

We will not allow people to set fires on our streets or occupy and vandalize our buildings. We will not allow people to jeopardize the safety of others by causing massive disruptions and hindering emergency vehicles from helping those in need,” police Chief Janeé Harteau said in a statement and Facebook video posted Thursday afternoon. The video featured scuffling protesters, including two that appeared to throw a Molotov cocktail. “The MPD has to, and will, strike a balance between First Amendment rights with the safety of everyone.

Not a rifle, but I'm adding a 9/shot Mossberg 590 to the collection. I figure that is as good a SHTF weapon as any.

Today I bought a rifle to clean.

I have many handguns and a few shotguns but I have known that I needed a defensive rifle.

I've been wanting to get an AR for a while but as with many of us, life sometimes gets in the way. Re-plumbed the house, new roof, new electronics for the boat. Stuff happens.

It is not anything fancy, just a stock AR for about $600.00.

It has been put out here many times, get your stuff while it is quite. Prices have stabilized but this is a short term situation. Due to the short term political picture, prices will not remain.

For now. I have a rifle to clean.

It's a good first step.

Shoot it, zero it, clean it, then make sure you have enough magazines and a way to carry them. Compared to what you had before, a rifle is a force multiplier, but it has to be kept in the fight. 'magazine out of your back jeans pocket may work in a pinch, but look into a way to keep 4-7 rifle mags on your person that is quick-on-quick off.

That's sound advice, LDD. Look to what the military does. Not to be a tac-ops wannabe, but because it works. Congrats on your rifle, Spinzone.

The next step, after you mag up will be to practice changing them out.
Just make yourself familiar with reloading. It will help when the time comes.

Good luck with your new rifle and be well.

I am curious what different people envision “SHTF” situations to be. We all have different ideas.

"SHFT" scenarios? A new thread on that topic might be a good idea so we don't lose the focus of this thread.

When the average guy needs a 590?

The first two, in the order I've listed them now, are what have been weighing heavily on my mind as of late.

I just finished Ted Koppel's book "Lights Out" which goes over the potential of a Power Grid collapse, mostly at the hands of cyber terrorism. Prior to that I had just read Tom Clancy's "Threat Vector", another good read about cyber terrorism.

The dollar collapse is probably more likely though.

Which of those three is more defensible? Probably the welfare stoppage. I think that will be more of a symptom of the Dollar Collapse than a stand alone scenario. I can't see any gov't now having the cajones to stop welfare.

Yeah, the welfare stoppage was just a throw in. Our monetary system is kind of scary, though.

Speaking of Garands, anybody have one of these he doesn't need? I can get one for about $40 but if you have one laying around I'd like to buy it for my SHTF kit:

Wife and I took my mother to Red Lobster for Mother's Day lunch, last Saturday. It made more sense to do something like that, than to try for something in the madness of the following day.

Sitting in the booth kitty-corner to us was a gentleman taking his lunch by himself. I had to look over my right shoulder to see him, but my wife apparently had a better view.

As he was having a shrimp cocktail for an appetizer, my wife nudged me and said, "isn't that a pistol he is wearing?" Sure enough, there was the bottom of a black OWB holster poking out from under his shirt (whatever it was, it was not some tiny pistole). He was dressed in work pants, so I guessed he worked nearby and was just on lunch. Good spotting by my wife ! Big Grin

I didn't say anything to her, but my first thought was: "good for him and I wish many more people were carrying."

Other than my wife, NO ONE noticed the entire time (of course). When he had finished his appetizer, I leaned over and asked him how it was. He replied it was okay and smiled. As I was also armed (always), figured it was good to just 'test the waters' as it were. I did not mention at all about him "showing" - why create a fuss when no one was paying any attention anyway ?

Shortly thereafter, he got up from the booth, but as he left his coat behind, it was obvious he would be right back... A moment later, the waitress came along with his steak and lobster lunch and upon seeing the empty booth had an expression on her face that immediately said she thought he had run off.

I intervened and said, "no, no, he just stepped away for a moment." Indeed, a moment later he was back and the waitress was visibly relieved. He had a puzzled look on his face and I explained what had happened and he was thankful.

A while later, we finally finished up and as we got my mom situated with her walker and all of us heading toward the door, I leaned over and said, "take care," but from the angle, he could not see me, only hear.

As we were getting mom into the car, he was also now leaving and returned the wish on the way by.

After that episode, I was reminded that "an armed society is a polite society." Smile
