Good luck on finding out what's going on, HBP is something I've fought for years even while younger, passed on by family genetics.

Mark, please consider moving on past this doctor who is not following up. You need a nephrologist for your son.

So Mark, "renal failure" is an extremely serious diagnosis. You need a referral to a nephrologist, and an explanation of what is known so far:
1. creatinine level (measure of kidney function)
2. urinalysis results (protein in the urine?)

Those have almost certainly already been done.
My e-mail is in my profile if you have questions or feel frustrated.

Stan

Also ask to have the tests run again now that his urine doesn't look like iced tea.
Proper hydration makes a world of difference.

Luck,

I agree with the recommendations to see a nephrologis. Understand renal failure and renal disease are sometimes used interchangeably by many people. I have had renal disease (started as acute renal failure) for quite a few years and my nephrologist sees me yearly. Today I am being treated for chronic renal disease. There are 5 stages of chronic renal disease and many people live their lives diagnosed with it without ever having to go on dialysis.

As your son is 19, ask if you can sit in with the nephrologist. Ask questions about anything you or your son do not understand. Have the MD explain course of treatment, and progression of the disease state. I also advocate keeping a copy of your son's recent blood work. The two results that will influence therapy will be the creatinine level and a calculated Glomerular filtration rate. After the acute phase, means watching the trending of creatinine levels and GFR perhaps without any other treatment.
I hope all goes well for your son.

I apologize but I forgot to mention that the pcp also scheduled an appointment with a kidney specialist the same day he got the results. He is doing well for my boy.

I took him for the ultrasound and blood tests yesterday afternoon. He also had to pee in a jug for 24 hours.

I think you're in good hands, now, Mark. Let the nephrologist take it from here. We're rooting for your boy. One good thing I see so far is that his BP is not so high that requires med at this time. Cool

Btw, is your son's PCP a pediatrician, or an internist, or family medicine doc?

Thanks.

His PCP is internal medicine.

I can't really read the prescription but it looks like he ordered:
CBC
LYTES (BMP)+
SED RATE

----- OTHER:
Inteu PTH
ANA dsDNA
ANCA
C3
24 hour urine for protein, creatine clearance.

Some of the tests are already back. They show chronic kidney disease. Frown They said the ultrasound looked ok (kidneys still functioning properly) but the blood tests were worse.

The nephrologist moved his appointment up to Monday. I'll have a plan of action soon.

So glad you are getting answers now, Mark! It sounds as though you've broken through whatever "road block" existed, and Marky is in good hands now!

I will be following along with this and future threads, and keeping good thoughts and prayers for Marky's successful diagnosis and improving prognosis as this all gets sorted out...

Your entire family is uppermost in my thoughts as you work through this!

Don

I'm sure the kidney doc will tell him the following, but it needs to start now, to avoid further injury to his kidney function, and to preserve what's left, imho.

*** Avoid taking anything / meds that could worsen the kidney functions. Ex: Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, etc.), or any other NSAIDs.***

Thank you. The only thing he ever takes is Allegra allergy pills and rarely a sinus pill with acetaminophen. Are those ok?

I don't have kids, so I can't imagine the worry and concern that you're surely going through. On the bright side, it sounds like they may have caught this early since his ultrasound was clear.

Best wishes for you and Marky. You and the doctors will get this figured out.

Be sure to ask the nephrologist about those sinus pills. Some of them contain decongestants that increase BP (e.g., psuedoephedrine), and maintaining good BP is crucial for CKD patients.

Great point!

Add oxymetazoline (generic for Afrin) and phenylephrine (Sudafed PE) to that decongestant list, but pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) tends to be the worst, especially if your BP is not already under control.

He has recently used phenylephrine and Afrin but it's extremely rare.
