What's the typical or optimal way to do it? How would you do it? How are the people in the Ukraine doing it?

Specifically, what are the practical considerations or logistics?

Do you dust off your shotgun from the mantle, throw on a coat and grab a canteen, and march off to the local high school and wait for an organized resistance?

Do you grab a rifle, throw on your best camo and go at it solo?

Drive up to the nearest national guard depot?

Pack up the family and get the hell out of dodge and let the professionals handle it?

Start burying your guns for the later resistance in case of a lengthy occupation?

Presumptively, there is some bad shit that's gonna happen if you are caught as an ununiformed combatant?

For an overview, it might be worth checking this book out:

"Total Resistance" by H. Von Dach (Author)
quote:
Total Resistance analyzes and overviews the techniques needed to overcome an invading force, formation of guerrilla units, weapons, food and medical considerations, ambushes, sabotage and much more.

Might be more detail there than you're looking for, but as a student of military history I have it in my queue to read.

The Geneva Convention does not apply to those caught out of uniform. Plus, whoever caught you is going to want information pretty badly and might want to make an example of you. Some of the captors may want to exact retribution into the bargain, depending on how successful the resistance had been.

No picnic.

After making sure that my family is reasonably safe (they have and know how to use their own guns), I'll volunteer wherever they resistance needs me to be. I can make ammo, accurately discharge ammo, and, at 72, who gives a crap!

Agreed.

What this looks like is different depending on your property, location, and capabilities.

For some, bugging out is a good idea. For most, bugging in is a better idea. Whether you hide in place, become a "gray man" hiding in the masses, or put up an actual defense will look different for everyone.

Do you have a team of people, can you outlast an invading force? Do you live close to anything important?

I've already bugged out to a location I think I can survive the most likely scenario. I continue to work on making my location appear very unimportant while fortifying and disguising my assets. I plan to keep my family with me, and my mutual assistance group (MAG) is small. A bit too small, so my current concern is the more numerous local MAGs which will look more like gangs. Good for me they won't be capitulating or assisting the enemy (foreign or domestic), but that doesn't mean they might not try to acquire what I have. THEY are my biggest realisting threat, so I focus on dealing with them.

If I lived in California, I'd be getting out of California. If I lived in a major city, I'd be getting far away from that.

I don't believe we'll look like Ukraine. The corner ammo depot isn't going to hand out weapons for the people to resist.

One of the most realistic scenarios I've read so far has been the ones proposed by Chad A. Rudolph. Checkout his "What's left of my world" series.

For a historical perspective, see the French Resistance during WWII. But they had lots of help.
And I would think it would be vital to be part of a trusted small group of like minded and skilled people.

Exactly, as a non-uniformed combatant, you would not want to occupy the same space as the invading force at the same time.

Think we learned this from the Karate Kid movie.

an organized military AND a looser organized 'militia' could complement each other well

going solo would be a foolish option

but a loosely organized / decentralized force consisting of mutually supporting sub-units has proven to work in the past

look at how the VC / NVA cooperated, Taliban tribal forces, etc

ideally the force would be tied in with local operatives who could furnish it valuable intelligence regarding 'soft' but high value targets

attacking main force invaders / prepared positions would be avoided. history provides many examples of successful small unit indigenous resistance forces.

bleed them by a thousand small cuts.

My neighbors are all those damn crabbers on TV. They can fish, shoot and stay awake for two weeks at a time cranking out hard work; all day and night long around the clock. This would be a rough neighborhood even though it doesn’t look like it.

North are all immigrant Asians fleeing authoritarianism. Strong firearm ownership!

No fantasies here, many scenarios. As a lifelong outdoors person, hunter, shooter, with some military experience, I’ll start there.

I’d be more comfortable on a wooded ridge with a view than an urban setting. With most big game hunting, sitting stationary, then allowing the target to move into view works best. It’s also harder to place the location with a single shot.

But besides that talk, there are a plethora of ways to help the effort, even without a rifle in hand.

There are way too many variables.

I’ve spent my time learning skills that I think will be most useful in most major crisis events possible to occur. Being able to survive off the land and having first-aid training will be of extreme value whether the crisis is an enemy invading or any other disaster, be it man made or natural. To that I’ve added some basic military skills and above average proficiency with many firearms as well as a decent cache of weapons, ammunition and other survival goods.

My general plan is to attempt to secure my families safety first, then do my best to find like minded people to help however I can. I think that having a decent menu of skills to choose from gives me a better chance at survival, and at assisting others.

I think I would have been quicker to guess if you had said 'IUD's instead.

An intrauterine device? I suppose that secretly implanting birth control devices in the enemies women would be effective eventually. I’ll be looking for something a little more short term but kudos for playing the long game! Razz

Since I can't move like a young fella anymore, I plan to stay put and snipe. I have a perfect overwatch position to take out vehicles and personnel on the highway leading through through the valley.

They'll get me eventually, but I'll take a bunch with me and die in a pile of brass.
