It sucks that this happened to you, especially while you're going through this 12-hour-shift-no-days-off garbage again.

Given that, enough incidents like this happened over the years that our department banned officers from parking squad cars in fire lanes unless we were actually on a call for service.

Perception is reality Kevin,

Veteran guy sees you parking in front of the store.
-the rest of the citizenry has to park further away...

Veteran guy sees you are on duty.
-he must do his sammich seekings on his time

Veteran guy has to wear his seatbelt.
-he doesn't understand that there may be exceptions (like driving under 35mph in NC) that can help you catch badguys

Don't worry about it. You are not going to change his perception or opinion of the cops.

I had a coffee buddy see me park at a corner (not in a marked area), respond to a shop, then sees me coming out with a sammich. He went out of his way to tell everyone that I drink coffee with about me ..
1. illegally parking
2. getting lunch while on duty.
3. parking in front of a fire plug (totally fabricated)

When I heard of it, I called him out on his bullshit in front of the group. And I explained it..
1. I was parked there, so not to double park and block traffic-I was there on a call for service there
2. After my call was finished I grabbed a lunch bag from the store
3. I pointed out the fire plug is actually on the other side of the street and told him he was a liar and just trying to provoke a reaction

Everyone else started laughing at him and he now refuses to talk to me. (no skin off my nose)

Mostly they don't know cops don't get lunch breaks and have to grab it between calls. They don't know exactly what cops do and don't understand the why either....so I ignore those guys.

Well sure, but that is the point.

THIS guy has never met me, and doesn't know a damn thing about me, or what i stand for.

same as I don't know a thing about him, or what he stands for (although based upon his behavior, i have an idea...)

He decided to lump me in with whatever his perception is, despite his ignorance of me.

He engaged the interaction... I was pricing cheese and not paying him any more attention than I would give anyone else...

I know it's hard after that many hours, but let that one roll off. This is the same type of guy that complains about the Fire Dept. taking the rigs to go shopping, or just "driving around town wasting fuel".

I was once in a store back home and an officer I knew had come into buy groceries, on duty. In this case it was because another officer decided to make lunch for the prisoners instead of feeding them McDonald's every meal. As we were talking some jerk came up and did nearly the same thing. Since I had my FD jacket on, he took issue with me as well for seeing the rigs parked at the same store every day.

The officer responded like this: "Sir, I understand your concern, however I am on duty, and buying groceries for the prisoners in the jail so they can have a decent meal. More importantly my unit parked right in front is a temporary deterrent to shop lifters, allows me very quick access should I have to leave in an emergency, and if <pointing at me> the hose draggers have to come, I'll need to move it anyway to direct people away from the mess they're going to make"

To which I followed with out standard answer:
"Sir, I also understand your concern, however the guys work 24 hour shifts which means we live at the station for a full day. We take the apparatus to the store for faster response, and it is not uncommon for us to leave a cart of our groceries for lunch or dinner so we can run out and respond. We also operate minimum manning so there are no extra guys to make the food run, and even if we did, we'd be a man short if we had an emergency as we certainly can't wait. We also do business inspections all summer long, so you'll see our apparatus driving around and parked in front of a lot of businesses. We also have to do drivers training for new people, and just generally to keep up on an ever changing city.

He gaffawed a bit and walked away.

Perhaps that will help. As our Chief once told us. You can't make all of the citizens happy all of the time, unless it's their house burning, then they're damn happy you're there.

the more I think about it, he really did look too young to be a Vietname vet... If the war ended in '75, that was 42 years ago. Seeing as he would have had to be at least 18 to enter the service, even if he served on the very last day of the war he would have to be 60 years old at the youngest....

He didn't look much older than 50, but looks are deceiving and honestly, I didn't pay him much attention until he was walking away...

I'm used to it. Like I said, I've been called much worse, by much better.

Hell, I've had people challenge me in honest to god fist fights for lesser reasons....

I'm not mad so to speak, more confused.

If the guy has an actual argument, I'd be happy to have an adult conversation with him as opposed to his temper tantrum.

If he wants to attack me, I'd be fine with that too. Then at least I know where he stands and can deal with it.

But grow up. If you have a problem, let's air it out. That's simple man code. Let's discuss it, let's be adults and make a point/counter point argument and find a common ground. That is what civilized people do.

Maybe he has some point I'm missing. Maybe I have multiple points he is missing. He did make a lot of assumptions that he couldn't possibly have known... Maybe we would end up old friends and go out for a frosty beverage together....

Meh. Thanks for allowing me to bitch.

Since I gotta be up in 6 hours, to do this nonsense again, I'm deciding to just chalk it up to meeting an asshole.

I'm going to bed, in the hope that if shit doesn't hit hte fan tomorrow, I will only have to work until wednesday with no days off, for a grand total of 19 days in a row with no days off, and a grand total of 26 days with only one day off.... Then i actually get two days to myself that I will probably spend rocking back and forth in the shower and trying to avoid any and all human contact.

Officially over it.... This is me refusing to allow some dolt to ruin my day. Plenty of other idiots will attempt to do so tonight...

I’m thinking about this, if I ran a department, I’d have a policy that kept this bad look from occurring.

IMO, officers can’t be seen buying personal items while parked “illegally.”

If you’re on call and responding, I’d ask my officers to move out of the fire lane, park in a normal spot and then run in to grab their sandwhich. Seems to me this situation could reasonably occur on a regular basis and a meaningful % of the community would view it as “the rules don’t apply to me,” so I’d not want it happening.

In doing the job, I can totally understand why you don’t see it that way, but that’s why I’d want my officers cognizant if it.

If I was running late for a meeting so I parked in the fire lane really quick while I ran in to grab a Diet Dew, and it was a store where I could see the fire lane from the counter, would a cop be cool with that? No ticket? If there was an emergency I could see a fire truck pulling up and run out to move my truck. I think not.

None of that excuses him being rude obviously. This just got me thinking what I’d do.

BTW – the term "a Richard" is new to me. Where does it come from?

Never mind, I just figured it out. I was 20 years old before I knew that Jack was a nickname for John.

I understand what you’re saying, but I would guess the vast majority of the public would look at that poorly. By no means does that justify him being a dick. If I saw a cop do that, I certainly wouldn’t be impressed. Just food for thought.

I disagree with the thought that the vast majority would look at that poorly. They would have little, to no, idea why the cruiser was parked there! I see cruisers parked in front of stores several times a week around here. Don't know if they are shopping, or arresting some dirt bag, or looking for some kid's lost mama. etc.

I figure our LEO folks have a hard enough time without making it harder for them. I respect them and thank them every chance I get.

But then my brother is a retired LEO, Idaho State Trooper who spent more time on the job than he needed to.

To Kevin, just accept the fact that there are assholes out there and when you meet one like the asshole in your post, smile at them and walk away. That pisses them off more than arguing with them, or even simply responding to them.

One more point to stress... the business, the one that owns the parking lot... has LITERALLY ASKED US to park as such.

"Perception is reality." Something to think about.

It might offend you but my perception from reading this thread.

1. You stayed on the clock to gain extra overtime pay on your way home from work and further extended the overtime pay by stopping to shop.

2. You parked in a "Fire Lane" while shopping.

3. Your protesting and offensive stance you have taken in this thread leads me to believe the Veteran's perception of you may have had some validity.

In regards to long hours at work many of us do and have done that, Police are not special in this regard.

Expect your conduct as a Police officer to be critiqued more than most professions.
Hold your head high as an Officer, but always consider how seemingly minor issues such as parking in the fire lane may be viewed by the public.
