Update:
Got home and the machinist’s straight edge and feeler gauges were on the porch.

My head is not warped.

Just hold it up against a glass window, have someone look at the head from the other side and make sure it's making contact.

We’re putting it back together. One of the fun parts about skipping all the disassembly steps is that the index marks for the crankshaft are under the flywheel and stator. I was able to use my new Fenix PS36R Pro, yeah I’m a sucker when Para recommends stuff, to shine enough light to see the marks on the crank and block through one of the bolt holes through the flywheel for the flywheel removal tool. Then you line up the mark on the camshaft gear with another mark on the block and install the timing belt. Still took is a couple of tries to get it right.

Because it’s an interference engine, we loosened the six valve adjusters before taking the timing belt off in the first place. Naturally we adjusted them once we put the timing belt back on. It’s been about 25 years since I’ve adjusted valves which leads me to a question: how tight should the locknuts be? I used a 5/16 ignition wrench and snugged most of them fairly well, but I didn’t get a couple of them quite as snug do to how the wrench fit in the limited space.

If you used a 5/16" wrench it is in the in lb
range.

Over tightening stretches the threads making future adjustments a PITA.
The jam nut ends up grabbing the adjusting bolt and when you tighten it turns the bolt, which changes the lash.

Yes, 5/16 ignition wrench. The end of the adjustment screw is a 3mm square which we held 4” adjustable wrench. It didn’t take much to break them loose in the first place.

Probably about 40 in lbs, maybe 60 depending on the screw size, which I'm guessing is 6mm.

Final update:

Ran it today, oil looks good. Unfortunately, before hooking the battery up, my son asked me “Red goes to positive and black goes to negative, right?” and I answered “Correct.” He then tries the tilt and it doesn’t work, I looked, and SOB he hooked the red wire to the negative post and the black wire to the positive post. I’m hoping it’s just a fuse. We pull started it and it ran great:

Edited to add:

Yep, just a fuse and they were good enough to include a spare.
