Looks like there is a new Citizenship in Society merit badge with no actual requirements. Linky Irving, TX – November 1, 2021— Today, The Boy Scouts of America (BSA), one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, announced the launch of the Citizenship in Society merit badge, its newest merit badge for youth in the Scouts BSA program (ages 11-17). The new merit badge encourages Scouts to explore important topics around diversity, equity, inclusion and ethical leadership and learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting. Beginning July 1, 2022, the Citizenship in Society merit badge will be required for any youth seeking to achieve the prestigious Eagle Scout rank. The Boy Scouts of America introduces the Citizenship in Society Merit Badge, the newest merit badge for youth in the Scouts BSA program. “The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law,” said Roger Mosby, president and chief executive officer of The Boy Scouts of America. “This merit badge aligns with both the Scout Oath and Scout Law, which encourage Scouts to respect the beliefs of others, to be kind and courteous, and to help other people at all times.” The Citizenship in Society merit badge is the latest initiative as part of BSA’s ongoing commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. Developed by BSA’s Office of Diversity and Youth Development Office, with input from a dedicated group of Scouting volunteers, BSA youth and professional staff, the merit badge pairs Scouts with merit badge counselors who will help guide Scouts on their journey of self-discovery and facilitate discussions as Scouts seek to further understand the diverse world we live in. “The Citizenship in Society merit badge is an important initiative to help Scouts learn about the diverse identities we each possess, understand different perspectives and experiences, and promote good citizenship in society,” said Elizabeth Ramirez-Washka, chief diversity officer and vice president of diversity & inclusion, Boy Scouts of America. The new merit badge complements existing merit badges, such as the American Cultures, Citizenship in the Community, Disability Awareness and American Heritage merit badges, which require Scouts to learn and grow their understanding of diverse perspectives and spur positive action. “As part of earning the Citizenship in Society merit badge, I learned that it’s important to understand different opinions and perspectives to become a good leader so that you’re prepared to handle any situation that comes up,” said Maya, a 15-year-old Scout who participated in the pilot program. “I also enjoyed getting to discuss diversity and inclusion topics with my friends in Scouting, as it felt like a safe environment to be open and honest about these topics.”

This is disappointing to read. The BSA might still be a good organization, but it’s damn sure not great like it once was. “Everybody wants a Sig in the sheets but a Glock on the streets.” -bionic218 04-02-2014

It needs to be disbanded. They've become utterly ridiculous and each time I hear about them, they're more ridiculous than the last. Yeah, listen, "Maya" ![]()

I don't understand who is exactly calling for this after decades of the 3 Citizenships. Is this supposed to bring in X number of new recruits because they offer this participation merit badge vs how many are they going to lose? I have a Webelos 1 son in a good Pack that is conservative and active, but the desire to continue on wanes and wanes with each newly introduced solution without a problem.

It's just another organization for young boys that's been hijacked by fucking leftist pukes. Disband it. By their very nature, all clubs and organizations are exclusive, but there's no way to explain that to these fucking assholes. Tear it down.

Read their Congressional Charter some time. They've departed from their chartered purpose so wildly that I'd actually be OK with a bill to strip it and dissolve them. They want to do this silly shit, they should build something more to their liking without a legislative nod of approval.

The "Boy Scouts" ceased to exist years ago. Replaced by the gay scouts and the I'm a girl that wants to be a boy scouts. I made it to Life scout and had all my real merit badges, only didn't get my Eagle project done. Makes me sad. ------------------------------------- Always the pall bearer, never the corpse.

I earned my Eagle Scout in 1997. My dad earned his in the 1960s as a Venture Scout. We were both in Greater St. Louis Area Council, we went to the same camps, things were pretty much the same. Things now just keep getting weirder and weirder and with us in Iowa we don't even go to the same places I went as a kid. I'm getting less and less enthused and their dues keep going up and up because their membership keeps going down and down. Settlements don't pay for themselves.

Isn't that just special? So much better than allowing adolescent boys to become men with real knowledge and values. What was that Merit Badge for? Come on, you can tell us! I was a Cub Scout, Webelos and Boy Scout (Star) in the 1960s. Still have all my handbooks. I can not begin to imagine being in Scouting today ... it has fallen over the edge with no return. Sad.

i gave up on them years ago. They screwed themselves years ago when the Boy scouts decided it was not an organization for Boys. They quit circling the drain a few years back and have long since been in the tank. Where they belong. It is too bad, but these people wish to ruin everything that is good. I'll voice the unpopular opinion. If the mission is to equip young people with the skills to be successful later in life, then an understanding of DE&I is important. DE&I is part of the professional, political, and community landscape. You can't stop it, it's already here. You may believe much of it is touchy feely nonsense, that some of it is coddling sensitive snowflakes for no reason, or whatever your objection may be...but it doesn't change that fact that every young person should be fluent in the language of DE&I and familiar with the concepts. I'm an Eagle Scout, and I believe that Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion is perfectly aligned with the Scouting values. I have Scouting handbooks that are three decades old that push diversity and equality.

^^^^^^ Just a quick note, the E in the new merit badge doesn’t stand for equality. It stands for equity. That’s all I need to read to know that it’s total bullshit. I believe in equality. But leftists have stopped pushing for that because that’s not what they want. They want handouts. The BSA pushing equity instead of equality proves how far they’ve fallen. “Everybody wants a Sig in the sheets but a Glock on the streets.” -bionic218 04-02-2014

hello darkness my old friend ![]() |
I was invited to a friends sons eagle ceremony they are planning in December. Normally I would be thrilled but the kid violated several key tenants of the scout oath. He started using drugs early and even overdosed last year to the point he has mental issues that required him to be sent regularly to inpatient mental health care for psychosis. Why he was allowed to continue in scouts I will never know but I seem to recall something about an oath that stated we were to be " mentally awake and morally straight." I guess the oath doesn't mean what it used to.

Exactly. Had I completed the merit badge, I'd have noticed the difference. And that's going to be important to know.

When I was a Scout, inclusion and equality was instilled by the simple use of manners and the base beliefs of what being a good citizen was…no need to call out and segregate. _____________________________ Pledge allegiance or pack your bag! Agreed. When all this diversity and inclusion crap began, we didn’t even have to ask our son if he wanted out- he came to us. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown
