I was a frequent customer of Fuddruckers in La Mesa years ago. Awfully good.

I stumbled across a very excellent burger in San Antonio a few months ago, Chesters, located on Lopp 410 near the Broadway intersection.

Unfortunately my appetite has diminished to the point where those very large burgers are multi meals.

On the good side, I’ve lost ~15 lbs so far this year.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

Chester's in San Antonio are good. They have a few locations.

Something a hit closer to you is TJ's Burgers in New Braunfels on loop 337.

Five Guys burgers are very 'meh'. So are their fries. They just give you a boatload of fries. Plenty of places around that make better burgers and better fries/sides. Now a Whiskey Cake OMG burger on the other hand...........

Depends...
I'm an In'n Out fan however I only order burger and drink, no fries. If I want something heavier, Five Guys makes a good burger however, their fries is what sets them apart..and I'm not a fries kinda guy. Haven't had a Whataburger so can't comment, none around here. Shake Shake I think is over-rated. The Counter and Smashburger do a good job. I enjoy supporting local shops, Super Duper is the one around here that I like, solid, unpretentious burger from the griddle.

Best burger I ever ate would be restaurant quality by chefs who understand food: The Spotted Pig in NYC. A half-pound of secret blend prime ground beef with a pat of Roquefort cheese and a perfect bun. No need for lettuce, tomato, mustard/ketchup or, secret sauce....it's that good.

When all else fails, Carl's Jr works.

Whataburger and crispy - crispy fries, for me.

Five Guys and In & Out burgers are just OK. Smashburgers for the fries. Freddies for the OK burgers, fries, Ice Cream and 50'music.

Side: a local In & Out burger joint is in same parking lot as Chick fil a. Chick fil a restaurant is packed, Burger place is empty.

I don't like Five Guys. Very expensive for what you get.
Give me In-N-Out, Habit, or Shake Shack anyday.

If its a new place and just opened it can be good.
The ones near me dropped off after they'd been open a while and I stopped going.

If ever in Elizabethtown, NC...stop at Melvin's.

But; I sometimes stop at Five Guys near me. They put too much sauce, mayo, mustard, etc. on the burgers. A small fries is enough for two hungry folks, before they get their burger or dog. I usually get the Little Bacon Cheeseburger and am content. Smile

I have been known to make an entire meal out of just a large Five Guys fries. The burgers are good but, considering the price, not great. They cook the meat a little too much, for one thing. If the Whataburgers in Texas are the same outfit as the ones in AZ, a Whataburger and a Five Guys fries, since they are near each other, would be great.

Five Guys is fairly good if a little overpriced. Better than McD's or BK by a long shot. We don't have any Whataburger or In & Out around here, so Five Guys and Carl's Jr and my go-to burger places (unless I have the time and patience to go to a sit-down place like Red Robin or Sanfords). Wendy's I only go to for the Frostys and maybe a small Baconator.

The best part about Five Guys is they don't put anything on the burger you don't ask for, so you don't have to guess what comes on it if you don't want/like something.

I'm gonna spend my money anyway, and the crap I have to put up with to earn it, I'm gonna enjoy the spendy part.

They aren’t fantastic, but good. And about a mile from the house. For flattop smashed burgers, I’d put them near the top. I haven’t tried the hot dog, but I just might now. Bacon cheese hot dog sounds great.

For top prize, I might go with the Counter, but that was a really pricey burger.

Wish I’d heard this advice before my visits. In three trips (one standalone store and two airport counters), the burgers have been decent but the fries were limp and extremely greasy, making them among the worst I’ve ever tried. The first time, I assumed it was a fluke. The second time, I chalked it up to the busy airport. The third time I didn’t care why. It was strike three and I’ve made it a point not to go back.

It's the only part of the "Secret Menu" that I've tried. They also have a burger on it that has 2 grilled cheese sandwiches used for the bun. Seems like too much bread to me.

The Whataburgers in AZ and Texas are the same outfit. Last I knew the one in Kingman was gone, but the ones in Phienix and Scottsdale were still there.
