"If we wanted to call an evacuation, we wouldn't even know where to call it," Emmett said, "cause we don't know where the rain's going to fall and which watersheds are going to be affected. So there is absolutely no reason to evacuate from Houston or the greater Houston area."...

What's with that? Are they really that stupid, or am I missing something?

Speaking of looting, I'm glad the Texas Congressional delegation is on record as being opposed to federal disaster assistance.
The free market also dictates that insurance rates will go through the roof -- if you still have one.

I thought that since Rita, they had evacuation plan in stages.. blocking police highway entrance ramps and only allow certain neighborhoods to evac at a time.

ONLY if they put an evacuation plan into place. They did not do it and instead recommended shelter in place.

Quite frankly discussions like this are counterproductive at this point. It is what it is and myself and the other 6.5 million people have to get through this. Plenty of time for what ifs and should haves AFTER this has passed.

Thanks for the information. I have been battling a tooth abscess and not been following very much. Been wanting to donate, but wanted it to be utilized properly. Not to buy a lobster dinner for some higher ups.

I got power back this morning and have been able to see some of the devastation around Houston. Austin-area members, there's not much news about up there. How are y'all doing? Best of luck and Thanks to the Louisiana folks coming to help and the forum members holding the affected up in prayer and thoughts.

Continued thoughts and prayers for all affected by the storm in Texas and elsewhere. My family members that had significant water in their house yesterday advised a short while ago that the water has receded some thank God. (610 loop, Stella Link area) They still have no power but have water working again. Not sure how safe the water is to use though. Just concerned that it is going to give them a false sense of security with all the additional rain expected today and the next couple of days. Stay safe everyone and make smart choices about your particular situation.

Harvey is moving back out in to the gulf and more east. That will eventually get us out of this rain. Sorry east TX, LA.

We have had " a good rain" and a little wind since it strarted. Some minor stream flooding. We are business as usual, my kids are up and off to the first day of school thisstarted. Just SE, Giddings, LaGrange, Bastrop and points south got hammered. Colorado river at Columbus and points north at all time record flood stage. Austin just barely dodged the bullet.

Turns out my other family members are dealing with flooded neighborhoods as well, but their homes were built on somewhat higher ground so only one other family member has gotten a little water into their back door and a roof leak, but there is also the dams that are at capacity that could cause additional severe flooding if they end up having to release water from them to avoid a catastrophic failure of the dams. This could get a whole lot worse for even more Houston and suburb residents depending on the dam situation and continued rain. Frown

I'm in Friendswood and although my house is high and dry that is not the case for many others. For those unfamiliar, there are creeks running through Friendswood just about any way in or out. The creeks provide drainage to the gulf. When the creeks cannot drain all the rain backs up and floods. Every creek I drove up on is flooded, some areas look like lakes. There is no way to get out right now due to flooding. I saw a city/county dump truck that was flooded near the creek.
I found one convenience store open and one doughnut shop. Everything else (WalMart, Kroger, HEB) is closed. If this storm keeps dumping rain people will start running out of supplies. I have plenty but I am sure may did not prepare. It is not over yet.

Several members of another forum I belong to have mobilized with their equipment to assist recovering those who are stranded. It's great to see people helping people out of kindness.

One of my employees was almost dispatched with a local agency. Apparently their $24,000 a day charge (government to government) was too much so they didn't go.

What would evacuating accomplish? A lot of houses are getting flooded, but few are flooded enough to be dangerous. As long as you aren't medically vulnerable and have several days of food and water, you'll be fine.

This isn't like Katrina where huge areas of homes were totally under water. It isn't like some of the huge river floods where homes get washed away.

So far, the deaths I have seen reported in Houston are from people driving their cars into or walking through deep flooded areas. That's how most of the people that died in tropical storm Allison died, too.

The statistics from when Rita hit were that in Houston and Galveston, there were 0 direct deaths due to Rita and about 70 due to the evacuation.

N Houston here, rain seems to have let up considerably. My back patio was nearly dry this morning.

Took a drive to see about getting in to the office, many road and freeways completely closed, blocked by police.

A little windier than it was yesterday, but the rain hadn't really picked up yet, just light drizzle so far.

As much as I don't like the Mayor of Houston, he probably did the right thing. A mass evacuation would have probably killed more than it saved. Where do 6 million people go? The line of cars would stretch to Kansas seeking infrastructure to absorb the masses.

The bottom line is this, we live in the information age. The public has as much information to make decisions as the Mayor or any other .gov official. Person responsibility should rule here.
