How do you feel about other members using your name in forum discussions if they happen to know it from outside the forum or otherwise?

It doesn't bother me and I've called members by their names and not their screen-name and I hope it's not offensive.

Actually I like the familiarity here that comes with using my "real" first name. But a big NO on last names. Big Grin

My real first name is part of my screen name so it'd be my own fault if it bothered me. Big Grin To make it clear for the blondes out there - I'm not bothered.

In posts, I generally address members I've met in person by their screen-name. A time or two, I've addressed them by their first initial.

Karmas are a different story. Whether I'm the donor or the winner, people I've never met have my last name and physical address, and I have theirs. I never have nor never will break that trust. I'd have smoke coming out of my ears if a karma resulted in my last name or physical address being posted.

I don't particularly care. It's not as if anybody who wanted to figure out who I was wouldn't be able to figure it out with a bit of amateur sleuthing.

In the I.T. world there's a saying that goes something like "Security by obscurity is ineffective." I've never relied upon it.

I don't go out of my way to advertise who I am. Neither do I go particularly far out of my way to hide it.

I prefer it. It's why I eventually started signing each post with my first name.

Something about being called Balzé all the time.... Wink

I tend to use their forum handle, I've had a few offline communications with members specifically ask not to publicly use their proper name.

If I know their actual name, I may use just their first initial, but usually default to forum handle, unless their name's obvious from their handle.

I've got a common enough first name [John] that I don't care either way.

Twenty or thirty years ago I would have been upset. Today, I don't care for internet anonymity.

I think everyone on every social media should have one and only one account directly identifying who they are.

I'm sure some dangers go along with that, fiscally and physically, but I still believe it's the best way to keep people honest.

Sort of like voter ID. There would be a lot less fuckery on the net if people only had one shot to get it right.
