So people born in the eastern bloc were giving their consent, by staying?

Were they free to leave, or to run for, vote for, or advocate for the system of government they wanted without fear of reprisal? (Obviously a rhetorical question)

Again, you are advocating anarchy.

"Radical freedom" means defending yourself and your own property, 24/7, without the assistance of civilized society. It means that "justice is the advantage of the stronger". Can you defend against the jungle of humanity on your own? Are you not better off with at least the attempt at 'ordered liberty' and the protections of a civilized society?

I'm not quite sure where I'm advocating, I'm simply denoting the choices we've got.

Additionally, I'm making no implications as to the effectiveness of that course of action.

Every election season, some asshat gets on here and encourages people not to vote.

Fuck 'em.

Vote as often as you can.

This much I'll agree with.

So you are not sure what you are advocating, you are equivocating as to what might happen if potential voters were to do the thing you are not sure about, yet you want to argue with everyone here about it?

Fender, thought experiments are all well and good.

Not voting is in no way noble, or intellectual, no matter how rigorous the rationale.

Unless you'd like to find an island and a Conch and start your own society, great. Meanwhile we've got to work with the system that exists, and that means voting.

Point in fact, changing that systems rules and laws, requires voting first among numerous types of activism.

Abandoning or rejecting the system and society we have here, but still living in it and enjoying its fruits and privileges, meanwhile decrying it, is the purview of the juvenile.

I would agree that not voting is akin to pacifism. An empty moral mantle easily shouldered, because it is weightless and carries with it no risk.

Frickin' vote. It is what Adult Citizens do, and with good reason. Not voting is a vacuum, and one that will be filled by those more motivated.

Arc.

If you want to discourage voting, please do it on a leftist site. At least that way, you would have a net positive impact.

I've never missed casting my vote even when deployed since first eligible. I can not fathom those who shirk their civic responsibility. Guess I'm just too old a fart to comprehend. Big Grin

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Voting has been a source of frustration for me, in that during the portion of my life I've been eligible to vote, I have only one time cast a vote for someone I legitimately wanted in office, rather than holding my nose and voting against someone worse.

I still vote, as it is my right and responsibility as an American citizen, but it would be nice to have the opportunity to vote for candidates more frequently than voting against candidates.

My father's reasoning was always pretty simple. "I don't vote because I don't want to be responsible for sending someone else's kids to a place like where I was sent." Spent part of 68 & 69 in SE Asia. Won't say it was right or that I agree, but it was at least a reason that made sense to him.

That doesn't make any sense. Abstaining doesn't abslove you from responsibility.

Where in Nevada do you live?

Nevada elected Jacky Rosen to the Senate by about a 5% margin.

U.S. Senate ›
Candidate Party Votes Pct.
Jacky Rosen Democrat 486,794 50.4%
Dean Heller* Republican 438,522 45.4
None of these candidates — 15,197 1.6
Others 25,382 2.6

If you break that down by County, only
Washoe County and Clark County gave Rosen a majority.

The problem with Nevada, is that the population is so concentrated in Clark County, around Las Vegas. It's like Illinois and Cook County, around Chicago.

The only solution is going to be to start winning over the hearts and minds of people in Clark County. Giving up isn't a solution. It's just surrender and acquiescence to socialism and tyranny.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
