His childhood was far from idyllic. His parents primary source of income came from owning & operating a liquor store.

His mother was upset that Jonny didn't have a plan to go to college after HS graduation. First generation Asian immigrant parents aren't exactly enthusiastic about their kids enlisting, especially during active deployment combat operations.

When Jonny was a HS senior, his father blew a gasket and threatened to kill his family. Jonny's father was killed in a SWAT standoff.

Navy SEAL, Harvard Medical School-trained physician, and astronaut Jonny Kim is scheduled to serve as a flight engineer aboard an upcoming space mission next year, NASA recently announced.

Lt. Cmdr. Kim is expected to be launched into space in March 2025 along with Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft. The three men plan to spend about eight months at the International Space Station.

As part of his space mission, Kim will conduct scientific investigations and other tasks to help prepare the space station’s crew for future missions.

To say that Kim’s resume is impressive would be a vast understatement. He served as an enlisted Navy SEAL and was later commissioned as an officer. He is also a dual-designated naval aviator and flight surgeon. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of San Diego and went on to graduate from Harvard Medical School and intern with Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital...

Jonny Kim’s resume already lists Navy SEAL, astronaut, doctor. He’s now returning to active duty.

A former Navy SEAL who completed an illustrious career as a NASA astronaut and engineer over the last decade is returning to active-duty military service, according to NASA.

Jonny Kim will continue serving as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy and work in naval aviation training once he leaves the government agency Thursday.

“Contributing to space exploration and serving NASA has been the honor of a lifetime,” said Kim. “Throughout my career, I’ve learned that beyond the missions, the training, and the hardware, success always comes down to the people. They are our greatest asset, and leading with love and empathy is how we achieve the impossible...”

You know if he didn't job hop so much, I bet that kid could go places.

He posted yesterday that he's serving one more year. I'm guessing that's to hit a certain number for proper retirement as if he didn't get accelerated years for hazard duty and space travel

I met Jonny Kim at the Golf Course Clubhouse on Maxwell AFB a few years ago. He and a few others were on a cross-country flight between Houston and the Cape. At the time, I worked close to the flightline and had noticed the NASA T-38s come in. He was personable and talkative while we stood in line. I knew nothing about him prior to this meeting, and was surprised when I looked him up. I'm glad he was finally able to go to space.

What an underachiever .

I'd like to see what his bucket list looks like and what hasn't been checked off already.

I have it on good authority that Chuck Norris wore Jonny Kim pajamas, and he may have been buried in the same.

Yes, he did, but that was just to warm up for his around-the-world run, which he completed in about 250 days.

Next year, he will hit 25 years of service.

He gets 12% more retirement benefits by staying one more year.

He also may have a chance of one more promotion, I don't have any idea if they will promote someone who is leaving.
