Do it!!!!!!!! As a Ducati fan just do it. Of all the bikes I have owned I miss my Duck the most….. and the classic Monsters well, in my personal opinion, there is no substitute.

I spent a few years on Harleys but Ducati's are special. You always know when one is coming down the road. Go for it.

And right on cue my Buell has decided once again to shit itself. Great bike but CONSTANT issues.

I’d heard this was a common problem with these bikes. This happened yesterday while it was warming up before a ride. It’s almost like the damn thing knows I’m looking at another motorcycle. It sucks but at least I caught it before I went riding.

Looks like yours had the safety wire hanger recall to support the front of the muffler for when it breaks done.
Imagine riding at speed if that breaks and drops.

Do it! Buy the Monster. I have been looking at them for years. Currently have my eye on an 748 mono, trying to decide between a new roof or a MC.

Son in law left town and asked me to get and take care of his Monster850. (He's a tech guy who moves around a lot, and he'd left the bike with a buddy for a cushy job with Meta in the next state over, buddy was starting to look around for work options and asked for it to be relocated. It was non-operational at that point). SIL, said I could ride it as much as I wished once I had it fired up.

I was thinking "WHHOHHOO". Fetched the bike over to my place and after the usual stuff had it working fine. I've ridden a lot of different brands and styles. My thoughts - I F**ing hated it. Not just a little either. This bike is a racing bike. Heres 3 of the things I disliked.

1st) The riding position is build for going fast, not going traffic light to traffic light. On the freeway, I it felt fantastic for a bit, but it would have been so very painful to do a long ride. After ten miles I couldn't wait to get off of it. It got uncomfortable fast. Until it got uncomfortable, it felt amazing, as if you were one with the bike.

2nd) The lock to lock on the steering is sucky as well for city driving. If you're racing, it's minimal side to side would be fine, but turning tight in the city: nope.

3rd) The throttle is designed to blast off, not a gentle twist you need for most bikes. So less than 1/8 of a turn in, it's an abrupt feeling and you're already moving faster than you want.

What they really have going for it is what those photos show, that incredible Italian design beauty. It has that in spades. I'm so greatful that I could ride it before I bought one, I'll never buy one now. Of course, your results may and will vary.

(My real name's Bill. I was feeling paranoid when I signed up:-)

I might have a lead on a pearl white 1200R. I just found out it may be available with no further details.

I went and looked at it. I got quite a bit of movement on price but I am not sure. It looks like this Monster has been in a crash. It has welds around the aluminum engine case where it mounts to the steel frame. If you look closely at the exhaust pipe in the pic I posted you will see a long dent in the pipe (look under the sight glass for checking the oil on the engine). Another indicator it was crashed.

I’ve owned and rebuilt bikes that have been down in the past and had A LOT OF FUN DOING IT but I don’t know about this one.

Part of me wants to get it and not let the damage scare me off but another part of me feels like this could be a good deal in theory only. The last thing I want is another bike with a myriad of issues and constant problems.

The S2R is not exactly a common bike so I am quite unsure of what to do at this moment.

On one hand I could thrash it without feeling guilty at all on the other hand I don’t want another diva in the garage constantly breaking like my Buell.

They aren't really "good" bikes but that doesn't matter, it's whatever talks to you. My Mini-14 and M1A aren't objectively "good" rifles either but I love them just the same. I'd hunt around for the right example. I'd also scour the classifieds of a Ducati forum, I find the real enthusiasts often keep better examples.

If you are tired of working on bikes, or daunted by current bikes needing work, this isn't the one.

Did you test ride the bike????? I'd be reluctant to buy any bike that's been in a crash, never know how well or poorly the bike was repaired. The owners willingness to come down on price easily might be a red flag. I'd pass

I’ve gone back and forth on this bike quite a bit. I still have not decided what I am going to do.

A minty Ducati Monster S2R 800 just popped up for sale locally in the same red & white colors for a few thousand more than the 1000.

BTW, I’m still working on getting you the details on that Moto Guzzi Nevada Classic across town from me. Maybe that would help you get your fix for an Italian bike. Big Grin
