Like I said in one of my previous posts; one local hospital, the Psych Doctors "exam and evaluate" psych patients via Zoom......It would be great if the were in a car down the road that is at least in the same zip code.

I can almost excuse the hand sanitizer. I can see someone in a crazy high stress situation not thinking, and remembering that hand sanitizer is mostly alcohol. _____________________________________________________ Sliced bread, the greatest thing since the 1911.

I can't say I condone the use of a Taser when a flammable liquid is known to be present. That aside I realize there is an expectation that given enough time and care that an individual with mental (chronic or acute) can be de-escalated, talked down, resolved, etc. From first hand experience, that isn't always the case, and just because you THINK you have them talked down is no guarantee they won't flip in a second. Case in point, had an frequent flyer alcoholic that although not known to be violent, would get very aggressive when in detox. Been there a lot, so we knew him and he new us. Normally once you talked him back from the edge he was fine and calm. On this one particular day it took us about an hour to talk him down. He was fine with going to the hospital then jail but needed a quick bathroom brake. The officer was female as were both para medics, and not wanting him peeing all over the mod, I got the honor of escorting him to do that. He was fine, seemed resigned to getting more help. We were having a casual conversation as he washed his hands at the sink. He paused briefly reached up on the shelf, grabbed a single edged razor blade and slashed his throat right in front of me. I was within arms reach and although I did get a hold of his arm, I wasn't fast enough to stop him. Fortunately his dexterity was impaired so he didn't cut very deep. Still an eye opening experience. I can’t see trying to get him into custody doused in gasoline and holding a lighter. Clear the dwelling. Options open up after that.

Same stuff happens here. We do it all by the book, get them into custody (without shooting them or setting them on fire), take them to the ER where they have their little zoom conference and often are back out on the streets in hours. Our local place is so bad I think they work harder to avoid admitting people than it would be for them to just do their freaking job and take them. When all this "Defund the police" stuff was going on and they were talking about sending social workers to these calls instead of cops, I figured that would last until some social worker got their butt kicked or killed by one of these nutjobs. What I should have realized is that not how this new system works at all...the mental health and social work people get all kinds of new grant money, but still do exactly what they were doing before, which is jack shit. I'm still undergoing post-exposure screening from one of the nutjobs a few nutjobs back who spit blood in my face (immediately after being released form the hospital, no less...we were still on the property), so maybe my attitude is a bit affected...but it's the truth.
