Texas Lawmaker Seeks Vote on Secession From US: 'Texit'

A Texas state representative plans to file legislation he hopes leads to secession from the United States.

Rep. Kyle Biedermann, R-Fredericksburg, said he will take action to secure a referendum on giving Texans the right to choose between remaining a state or becoming an independent nation.

Biedermann wrote in a statement posted on Facebook this week:

"The federal government is out of control and does not represent the values of Texans. That is why I am committing to file legislation this session that will allow a referendum to give Texans a vote for the State of Texas to reassert its status as an independent nation."

Biedermann said his bill will focus on Article 1 Section 2 of the Texas Constitution, which reads:

"All political power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are founded on their authority, and instituted for their benefit. The faith of the people of Texas stands pledged to the preservation of a republican form of government, and, subject to this limitation only, they have at all times the inalienable right to alter, reform or abolish their government in such manner as they may think expedient. #Texit"

The hashtag Texit is a play off the Brexit movement to get Britain to secede from the European Union.

Texas, which became a state in 1845, actually seceded in 1861 when it joined the Confederate States of America. It was fully readmitted into the Union following the Civil War in 1870.

There have been groups, such as the Texas Nationalists Movement, that have supported secession. Hundreds of secession motions previously have been presented to the Texas Legislature, which will reconvene Jan. 12.

First step: Control your borders and implement intelligent immigration rules.

Establish diplomatic relations with the United States and think about a "Compact of Free Association," liberal trade agreements, and the like.

My wife and I will be among the "early" prospective immigrants once you get your vetting process worked out.

Missouri and Oklahoma would be part of that as well.

Been thinking once I hit the retirement age I will be out of WA and move to the real free country.

The problem with this is splitting off from the Union for a state or a few states would be difficult for a long time due to how dependent we are on various other states for a variety of things. Not to mention travel etc.

Now TX is one of the very few states that technically has the resources, ports etc. to pull it off but it wouldn’t be a pleasant or easy change.

Alas I have seen some form of union split coming for some time and it saddens me.

I agree. However, splitting up the USA was tried once before and it didn't end well with those seeking to split.

Several decades ago I read an article that suggested that the US would eventually split up into about 3 countries. Maybe that time has come?

Yes and my point was assuming an “amicable” split, even with that it would make for some difficult lives for EVERYONE in the country.

Not sure how true it is, but there's an oft-repeated statement that claims Arkansas is the only state in the US who has sufficient internal resources to be totally independent. Meaning we wouldn't have to import any water, food, energy, lumber, etc.

(And while we don't have any ocean ports, we do have a number of large river ports, so that wouldn't be any different than another landlocked country.)

Well, Texas has experience in being its own independent country .

Me too. But we can't live free with the socialist/communists boot on our necks. If we can't even have free and fair elections we run out of other options.

Guess I'll be moving down near my son. Pretty much had it with Commierado anyway.

Thinking that Texas was the only state with the ability to secede from the Union. When other nations joined the U.S. (Vermont, etc...) they did not add this little nugget of reality to their laws.

Also of note: There are three major power grids in the US. One that covers the east cost, one that covers the west coast, and one that covers Texas.

Can Spring Grove, IL join in on this as well?

WV is free for now, but so sparsely populated that it wouldn’t take much importation of leftist poison from VA and MD to take it by numbers; I’d strongly consider TX as a new home if they can pull it off. If Arkansas was part of the mix, I’d move there in a heartbeat- I like it at least a little green

It is increasingly clear that this sort of thing is likely inevitable. When one side can blatantly attempt a coup against a duly elected President, commit widespread election fraud, widespread corruption of officials and no one in the government will stand up against the continued trampling of individual rights, this is no longer a free country. The States voluntarily entered the union and have every right to leave it if they wish.

Not going to happen. A waste of time, just another politician trying to get his name in the news.
