It isn't really a clusterfuck when the activity is inherently that dangerous. Some years are worse than others, but there is always a significant chance of dying.

Whether it makes any sense to participate is a different question. But everyone up there is up there of their own volition.

I've known three physicians who were everest-a-holics. One died, two paid heavy prices for their "avocation".

It simply makes no sense to risk your life in that manner.

Yeah...I'll do Ride the Rockies where you ride up to a 100 miles a day up over mountains in Colorado for 7 days.

But anything where you are climbing through the "Death Zone" - I'm out...so, so out.

and defend...

Mount Everest will always be dangerous. Because it's the biggest mountain it gets headlines more so then others major peaks. It also get more deaths because you have so many people who really shouldn't be there trying to climb it just to say they can.

Have $80,000 to throw around, do some training, pay a guide service and you can make a attempt at the summit.

There are many other much more challenging climbs for true mountaineers.

Here's a trailer for a short film of three world class climbers.

I was trying to find picture the other day of what it looks like now. I think the danger(deaths) and there is a backup because it's takes longer to navigate. Although who knows what it's really like up there now.

Reportedly, the step is intact. There's a large amount of snow on it and climbers on another route thought it was gone.
There's been a ladder placed there for years. I watched a video where there was a solid line of climbers and one was stuck, unable to move. Think others started climbing over him.

I understand the attraction and desire, and am ok with people that want to do this. It's dangerous, with little room for error. If you make it, high five. If you die it was your choice.

This. K2 requires real mountaineering and climbing experience. Your not paying your way to the summit. K2 would destroy most of the people that summit Everest.
