I thought a lot of these loons were going to leave the country if Mr. T got elected. Did their green cards get them back in?

I of course won't be tuning in. The entire Oscars thing has gotten completely out of hand. It has morphed into a self serving Spectacle that has less and less to do with the industry people being recognized for excellence in their field, and more and more to do with "hey, look at me, I'm one of the cool kids and my world views are more important than yours"

Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves.

It was Spotlight, Birdman, and 12 Years A Slave, then Argo and The Artist before that. My point is they have become entirely forgettable, no lasting imapact or influence on society or even filmmaking. They are frequently small indie films, good not great, and foisted on us often for their political statement. And, if the real story behind the movie doesn't make enough of a statement, the fictionalize the hell out of it until it does.

There's two arguments to that, 1) Not every year is going to have epic, memorable movies, 2) Hollywood movies are dominated by board room decision making and focus groups; movie making today is all about big-budget, tent-pole features and little filler flicks satisfying various sub-genres. Comedy falls into two categories, base-level garbage or, rom-com; action movies aren't even adventurous, just a lot of explosions or, fantastical gun-play; dramas revolve around identity crises' or, childhood trauma. To find a decent movie, you're practically crawling to independently made movies or, foreign movies; a great deal of them are crap but, there's some gems who unfortunately don't get any marketing support, versus the tent-pole films which get shoved down our throats during every advertisement, trailer, advert before stream...

After Star Wars beat Smokey and the Bandit in Film Editing, I knew the whole thing was rigged.

Without googling it, I'd be willing to bet most people here couldn't name more than one of the five movies from 1977 that were nominated for best picture in 1978. Even after looking at the list, I have only seen one of the two movies I recognized. Don't remember the other three at all.

The movie, or the sinking? Smile

I'm with you. I don't know when I was last in a theater. I know I went to "Empire Strikes Back", and I think I went to something about 10 or 15 years ago- I remember being in the lobby to the theater with the wife, but don't remember what we watched. It must have really impressed me. Nothing on the marquee looks interesting in the least.

Most of the movies running for awards are "Never heard of it" to me. Seems the release the movies at the end of the year to qualify for the Oscars. Then have selected screenings for academy members that vote.

Actually, the best picture is never the one that makes the most money. Few are truly blockbusters. Oscar winners also do better overseas then in America.

Most films that contend for awards are called "Oscar Bait." It's defined as:
"Films seen as Oscar bait often have distinct characteristics. Lavishly produced epic length period dramas, often set against tragic historical events such as The Holocaust, are frequently seen this way and often contend for the technical Oscars such as cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, costume design or production design.[6] Alternatively, if set in the present, the plot may center on a character with a physical or mental disability. The cast may well include actors with previous awards or nominations, a trait that may also be shared by the director or writer."

Being female and all, I like to see the gowns and jewelry the women wear, so I'll watch the pre-show. Some of the jewelry is spectacular (and on loan), but to hell with the awards and speeches.

Sorry, but I really don't give a shit. I'm aware of their views and don't share them.
You cared enough to open the thread, and you're missing my point.

I got your point exactly, but I'm going to try watching it just for the entertainment value of watching stupidity in action. Sort of like dumb and dumber. I like watching my wife's reaction to the more stupid comments by the holywood libs. But if I feel like throwing up at any point, I will join you guys on a different channel.

The only part I'm interested in this year will be the tribute to those that have passed, especially with Bill Paxton's death yesterday.

Right now "Guardians of the Galaxy" is on FXHD so I'll watch that until the Oscars start, the second they get political I'm out. I can catch the tribute online after the show's over.

I do hope "Hell or High Water" gets at least one of the 4 it and the actors are up for.

The first salvo against Donald Trump was fired only a few seconds into the Oscars’ opening monologue.

After a joyous opening musical number by Justin Timberlake performing “Can’t Stop the Feeling” that brought the crowd to its feet, host Jimmy Kimmel took the stage at the 89th Annual Academy Awards and threw out one POTUS joke after another:

“This is being watched live by millions of people in 225 countries that now hate us,” Kimmel said.

Kimmel also had this to say: “I want to say thank you to President Trump. Remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist? It’s gone thanks to him.”

And this one: “In Hollywood, we don’t discriminate against people based on what country they come from. We discriminate by age and weight.”

But Kimmel also surprised by throwing out this plea for unity: “If every person watching this show … if every one of you took a minute to reach out to someone you disagree with, someone you like, and have a positive, considerate conversation — not as liberals and conservatives, but as Americans — we could make America great again.”

You can provide feedback here:

Fuck you ABC and Jimmy Kimmel
