I didn't think anyone could be more of a disaster for the city of Chicago than Lori Lightfoot, then this guy comes along and doesn't say "hold my beer"...he says "hold my sixpack!"

Chicago's Dem Mayor Brandon Johnson now wants to create city-run grocery stores to promote 'equitable' access to food after Walmart and Whole Foods close stores

I wonder if all the products will look like this?

Does anyone remember those? My stepmother bought the hell out of that stuff in the late 70's to mid 80's.

A government run grocery store in Chicago would make the Soviet Era Russian bread lines look appealing.

Groceries with the customer service of the DMV and accounting practices that'd the mafia blush.

Would you really want to buy meat from someone who wasn't hired based on competence and cannot be fired? I wonder if civil immunity will apply to negligent meat safety practices?

Yep. Socialism/communism has always worked out so well... Roll Eyes

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Just make the food free and have the tax payers pay for it. Then you don't even need to hire cashiers. Just a stocker or two.

As a Chicago native, I have a better solution. When I was a kid the Outfit ran everything. No problems with supply and some kickback to them. The store employees might look a little rough but you got what you needed. From time to time a body might show up the parking lot, but that would merely be the price you would pay.
The other alternative would be to turn it over to the gangs. They run the city already.

Oh, wait... we already do. EBT cards?
When do we run out of tax payers?

Interesting concept, government stores that accept government payment methods, so they are like the company stores of yore in the mountains of Appalachia....

The words, "Equitable" and "Whole Foods" should never be used in the same headline.

C'mon now, don't forget these will be Union employees, either SEIU or Teamsters...OR, they may even belong to both unions somehow! Eek

To be clear, there will be NO skimping on the over-staffing of lazy, under-worked & over-paid employees on the taxpayers dime if the 'Chicago Machine' has anything to do with it!

Yep. I remember as a kid on the South Side, everyone seemed to know someone who knew someone who was "connected". I certainly don't condone organized crime, but they did have an "orderly" way of running their business. And the bodies that ended up in the trunks of cars were mostly guys from that world and not innocent bystanders.

Ohhhh, I hope he does it. It'll be fun to watch Smile

Let us take a gander at Hizzoner's CV, shall we...?

Has a BA in Youth Development and a Master's in Teaching.

Before being elected Mayor he worked as a social studies teacher, has been a union organizer, worked on political campaigns, was a Cook County Commissioner, and ... that's it.

IOW: The man's never held a real job at a for-profit entity in his life.

But, his administration is gonna run grocery stores in places even Walmart couldn't make it work?

Yeah, right

Walmart has to make a profit to survive.
Government just has to find someone to take it from.

Oh, we all saw it, even from a thousand miles away, this is no surprise. We all knew that electing this clown was simply doubling-down on the Lightfoot policies of idiotic governance.
The 2nd place candidate Vallas was the main opposition however because of how ranked-choice voting works, the next closest vote receiptants for progressive types like Lightfoot and Wilson went to Johnson boosting his tally and pushing him over the finish line.

The mayor is only a symptom. The illness is the voters who keep electing them.
