I know where he lives. Last time I was there we met up. He lives around the corner from one of my people that live in Maui. A lifelong friend lives walking distance from P210. I called my friend today and he is fine. His complex is right around the corner and no issues. I stay there 1-2 times a year. P210 should be OK.

Now my Filipino friend, I cannot reach and I’m worried. His house is just a few miles North of the Foodland in Lahaina. And the Foodland is history, burnt to the ground. No telco is working in Lahaina and I cannot reach him. I’m worried about him, his wife, and his 2 young boys. And the work he and his family has put into his house over the past 5-10 years. The deck wraps around his house so you can see the Ocean from one side and Lahaina, and the other side points right up at the West Maui mountains. They just built an addition to it for his sister to move in so if that place blazed up, oh my. I’ve been worried as fuck all day. No response to texts or my voicemail. They have reported 6 casualties so far and many more burned. His youngest son has a heart condition and has had 4 heart surgeries so he and his family have been through enough. I want to call the resort where he works but I don’t want to add to it. Very very worried.

Yeah this is horrible. I had heard Hawaii had fires that would be made worse by the hurricane but did not check to see which islands.

I just heard from a friend on Maui about the devastation but that they are safe.

Just two years ago I visited every part of Maui. The Banyon Tree in Lahaina was amazing and so sad to see it and the whole city gone! Such a terrible loss.

I can't believe this is no longer around.

Got a call last night from an old friend (Maui Tea Party), who now lives in Montana. We could share our mutual sadness at losing this historic town, and at the losses of homes and businesses. Everyone who lived on Maui loved Lahaina except for the traffic on Pi'ilani Highway.

I just did a google streetview tour around that area and was surprised at how much dry scrub there was in the area.

I've only been to Oahu but guess I never really noticed it there. Clearly I wasn't paying attention to it.

Each of the Hawaiian Islands has a wet side and a dry side; the wet side is from the trade winds depositing the moisture in the air when the air rises as the winds hit the mountains. On the leeward side of the mountains there is little moisture left. Those areas are basically desert with scrub or lava in their natural state. Wailea on Maui has lush trees and turf around the hotels--it's all artificial. Just across the road is the natural vegetation, which is dry scrub that burns easily.
Because of the depositing of moisture on the windward side of the islands, the mountains are some of the wettest places in the world with rainfall in the hundreds of inches a year.
The major tourist places--Kailua-Kona on the Big Island, Kihei, Wailea, Lahaina, and Ka'anapali on Maui--are on the leeward sides.

My wife once got a private drum concert with Mick. There was a political meeting at the restaurant, I think a talk by Newt Gingrich. Mick was supposed to supply a rock band that didn’t show up, so Mick just drummed for the group.

I've been to Fleetwoods several times and he had a huge art collection on the ground floor and his restaurant had a huge collection of irreplaceable rock and roll memorabilia not to mention his instruments

My wife and I are reminiscing about special times in and around Lahaina. My son-in-law asked for my daughter's hand while we were on a sport fishing trip out of Lahaina Harbor with Start Me Up. I came back with a lot of fresh mahi mahi and a future son-in-law. Our neighbor was the MC for a luau in Lahaina. I have video of same son-in-law awkwardly on stage trying to follow hula instructions, while our daughter flirted with him and did a much better hula.
A patient comped us to the magic show in Lahaina; he was supposed to be a ghost playing a piano. We sat in front and were the butt of all the magician's jokes.
I bought a scrimshaw knife at the scrimshaw store on Front Street as a wedding present for my son-in-law.

I was sitting under it last November. Very cool tree

I completely circumnavigated the entire island over a couple days.

That will be the question. Can it recover the damage it took. I sure hope so. If so, it will become an even stronger symbol of strength for the island.

I'm not a tree hugger, but I do love history. This tree is 150 years old. Think of what has happened in the last 150 years......
