On a BART train, a hippieish gentleman (actually wearing a tie-dyed T-shirt) approached a uniformed police officer and asked her if "her gun had bullets". She responded that a gun wouldn't be much good without bullets. He came back with how having loaded firearms on a commuter train just doesn't make sense. They both walked away shaking their heads.

That was funny. That might be the reason that FBI agent got carjacked in Chicago. LOL

Oooh, that's a good one. I had a friend who said guns are for cowards, there's no honor in them.

Listen, we're not dueling, this isn't a matter of honor, it's some asshole breaking into my house. Bypassing a lock isn't honorable either, so fuck him. If homeslice wants to get fresh with the resident of the house he just broke into, then he takes his chances with getting shot. There's no honor, or dishonor, just outcomes.

The same friend couldn't understand why anyone would want a handgun that fell between a snubnose .38/.357, and a FN Five Seven. Either you carry a small, low capacity revolver that's easy to hide, or a full size automatic with a "big clip" and armor piecing bullets. He was using video game logic.

Had some yippity ewe ask me once why I carried a gun. I told her I could give her a very lengthy list but the most important reason is because I have children and it is my ultimate responsibility to protect them.
She looked at me with a crazed face and said you would shoot someone for your child. I knew nothing intelligent was going to follow.
She said I could never do that. I had to follow up and said if you were watching someone harm or kill your child you would not do what you could to stop them by any means neccissary even shooting someone, you would let them be killed.
She replied with quick and strong yes it is wrong to kill people and she would not do it. I then informed her anyone trying to harm my family would be killed with a quickness. She again just said it would not be right. I asked about what a mama bear would do to her if she were to get between a mama bear and her cubs? Her reply, well that is different they are wild animals. I just looked at her and said poor kids then walked away.

My sister found out that I had purchased a gun. She sent me a letter saying that statistics "proved" I was more likely to kill my wife and family because there was a gun in the house.

I wrote back asking for a copy of those statistics, and said that I found it hard to believe that purchasing a gun for their safety could somehow turn me into their murderer.

We did not speak for 5 years after that. (No great loss, either).

From Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership:

This is a great article that looks at anti-gunners.
*long article

Raging Against Self Defense:
A psychiatrist Examines The Anti-Gun Mentality

By Sarah Thompson, M.D.

How often have you heard these statements from misguided advocates of victim disarmament, or even woefully uninformed relatives and neighbors? Why do people cling so tightly to these beliefs, in the face of incontrovertible evidence that they are wrong? Why do they get so furiously angry when gun owners point out that their arguments are factually and logically incorrect? How can you communicate with these people who seem to be out of touch with reality and rational thought? One approach to help you deal with anti-gun people is to understand their psychological processes. Once you understand why these people behave so irrationally, you can communicate more effectively with them.

Defense Mechanisms

Projection

About a year ago I received an e-mail from a member of a local Jewish organization. The author, who chose to remain anonymous, insisted that people have no right to carry firearms because he didn’t want to be murdered if one of his neighbors had a "bad day". (I don’t know that this person is a "he", but I’m assuming so for the sake of simplicity.) I responded by asking him why he thought his neighbors wanted to murder him, and, of course, got no response. The truth is that he’s statistically more likely to be murdered by a neighbor who doesn’t legally carry a firearm(1) and more likely to be shot accidentally by a law enforcement officer.

I had some old coot interrupt me mid-magazine to tell me that I couldn't shoot my M11/9 because it was illegal to own it. I don't know if he was "anti" or not, but thinking you know anything about the NFA because you happened to be a cop once was pretty fucking idiotic.

He wasn't even a good bad cop. By his own assertion, it isn't illegal to shoot it, just own it.

Sort of like CA laws until this year. It was never illegal to possess high-cap magazines, just purchase, sell, borrow, lend, give, manufacture, receive or import. Nothing against finding or having.

That nonlogic didn't take long to dissemble, but she walked away happy with herself for no reason before I could get to the moneyshot. That she was more likely to be saved by a gun than I was to die by my own. Pity.

This bit of tardery was farted out by my aunt on the Facebook. I try not to get involved with such nonsense there, but when it comes to guns, that's a thing I know about, and so a lot of times I cannot help myself, in this case letting her know that assault rifles have been heavily regulated for over 80 years, and no new ones have been made for the civilian market here in the last 30. Inevitably, some bleeding heart fuckhead rolls in with a link to Cheaper Than Dirt! (the exclamation point lets you know it's the punchline of a joke, because they aren't. But we all knew that) showing that you can buy "AR-15s" and "AK-47s" and thus I am wrong. It's okay though, I think he's my aunt's weed dealer, and he's smoked himself stupid.

And then several of my friends rolled in, and called him names. It was great fun. Maybe he'll be back with more Feels.
