I traded in my (paid off) 08 JK on a new 15 model; credit union interest was 1.5% & payments have been barely $101 on the difference, & now that's down to barely $2000 left. Geezer insurance rate is about $54/month. My last 2 tanks of gas averaged just over 20 mpg.

Yes, every day every trip I still feel the silly grin.

I waited a couple decades before yielding to leaping back in to a Jeep. Perfect timing after all.

Please do not tell $350 unless you plan to finance for a decade. Because a $30000.00 vechile will cost you at least double and that is just the vehicle cost.

Not including tires/repairs, which are macro items in my budget for both vehicles:

Jeep monthly:
Payment $450 ($23,000 @ 3.75% for 5 years, after downpayment and trade-in)
Insurance $40
Gas $250

$740 monthly vehicle cost.

Currently:
Payment $359 (not including paying $250 extra monthly)
Insurance $60
Gas $125

$544 base, $794 including extra payments I've been making on the Mazda.

Pretty cut and clear, right there. Buying a new Jeep and paying the regular costs would be below my current budget numbers. I just surprised my self!

I'm driving a 2012 Wrangler Sport. Had it for almost six years. Decent fuel mileage. A few minor issues but nothing to make me want to say "why did I buy it?"

P.S., better learn the Jeep wave.........

Either trade it or sell it myself.

There are some used JKs in the area that look good, too.

Too many options. This could just all end up being an academic exercise. I got 35mpg on my way home from work tonight. Probably would have been 17 in a Jeep. It's 16 miles to work. Makes a man take pause. But it's only 4 days a week Big Grin

Hell, 30-40 year old CJ5s that are barely holding together are all over Craigslist for $5,000-$10,000+.

There's a used 2016 JK 4 door with 27,000 miles certified-preowned at a local dealership for $27,500. Nice tires/wheels, too. Wonder what they would drop to...

Shop you financing a little more.
I just got 2.75% from my Credit Union.
That will save you about $900 over the life of your loan.

I am a member of 2 credit unions that love to battle each other. They both usually offer to beat your current loan or they’ll give you $100.

I shop them both take the lowest and then a couple months later have the other try to beat it.
So in a couple months I’ll have me an extra $100.

Once one was offering they will beat your current rate by 1% or they would give you $500.
I had a rate of 1.99% so pretty good shot it would not be beat by 1% she said the best she could do was 1.75%. I said GREAT write up the loan and just add that $500 to the principal of my loan!
She looked at my quite confused. I said you beat my current rate so I’ll take the new loan but since you did not beat it by 1% I get $500 so just slap it on my principal.
She looked at me and said I don’t think this has ever happened before. And I have never seen the $500 offer since only $100 and never to beat your rate by a certain amount.

Also remember dependent upon when your Mazda payment is/was due most places can bump your new payment out 45 days. So you should be 1 month without a payment so you can apply that money to the down payment.
Or maybe grab yourself some sweet Jeep accessories!!

Back when AMC bought the brand in 1972 we were afraid they would ruin it. They modified it a little but putting the V8 in more than made up for the damage. When Chrysler took over and put the square headlights in we were pretty sure the brand had gone in the shitters (we were mostly right). But along came the TJ in 1997 and resolved a bunch of the bad stuff and gave us coil springs that worked and a decent 4.0 liter engine that even made some horsepower (replacing the 258 that didn't make horsepower). Then we were pretty sure the new JK would be a flop. Sort of right except it attracted the girls. They used a terrible incantation of the V6 that was a dog. By 2012 Mercedes Benz had redeigned an engine that by almost all standards was good. It makes 285 honest horsepower and gets the JK down the road. Not a racer but respectable enough to make us happy. The only drawback was the gas mileage. At least as good as the engines that came before, but it costs fuel to move all that mass down the road.

Now the end is near. Fiat as pussyfied the thing, even tampering with the last 45 years of good taillights. It looks like an italian car (notice I didn't capitalize it). Maybe the country with the worst brand is Italy. They push a brand called Fiat. That is a Fiat tail light. Gay salesmen will prance around the dealerships selling all these imagined features to potential buyers like they have any idea what they're talking about. So neither the sales idiot or the starry eyed buyers will have a clue as they haven't even gone on gravel roads with one.

I had a two door 2004 Rubicon. After I almost got rear ended at a stop light by a large SUV going about 50 miles an hour, I stopped driving it with my son in the back seat. There is only about 18 inches between the back seat and the tailgate.

Other than that, I loved my Jeep. It was my daily driver. The mileage was bad and it was noisy but that is part of the deal. I have been looking out for a nice TJ because I miss having a Jeep. I drove it on the beach and took it four wheeling in the mountains.

I will look around. Rates have gone up since I bought the Mazda. It’s at 2.5%. My credit union is a yes/no kinda place. Not sure if they all are or not. No sliding scale , just a qualify or not, rate based on term.

My sister in law just bought a new jk. She paid a little over $33k. I don't know why but in my area the wranglers are a fashion accessory for suburban soccer moms. They need that off road capability for the Rubicon trail that leads to the mall and grocery store.

Your calculation should include depreciation, as Wranglers have higher than average resale value. Here's my 2015, 6-speed manual daily driver. Love it!

Been looking today.

Looking at used, drove a 2016 that had 24,000 miles. 4 door, Sport manual with A/C and pretty much stock but with nice tires/wheels. Aftermarket or upgraded. It’s what I want. Looks brand new, much better than the other used ones we looked at. Certified preowned with an extended warranty on the power train, 7yrs from original purchase/100,000 miles. Same blue as Jeff’s, above. Soft top. Drove it about 20 miles mixed roadways. Did 80 on the interstate surprisingly smoothly.

I had them down to $27,000 on the raw Jeep price when I left them today. That’s with my trade value not quite topped out, in my opinion. Plus tags, title, doc fees that they wouldn’t budge on yet. $1,500 for that. Nuts.

Went to a Mazda dealership to see what they’d give on my car. Slightly higher. Looking at their groups inventory to get a quote to use against #1. Also checking carmax and Carvana.

Going to check with my wife’s credit union. Their used rate is half my credit unions!!!

Any suggestions on the price war?
