The air above the din![]() |
Life is short. You work hard. Get the Jeep. If you're really concerned about making a family concession, split that baby and get a 4-door. But Jeep is always preferable to no Jeep, regardless of how many doors the thing has. I've had Jeeps as my daily driver for the last 13 years. Minor issues here and there, but never had a serious problem, never once regretted owning a Jeep.

I won't talk you out of it. You might be able to find a good condition TJ 2005-2006 Rubicon with the 6-speed. I've driven the JKU, it grew on me and I like the new JL.

I just do not see how it would be very practical in your described situation. Listen, I understand "wanting one". Nothing wrong with that. And I also realize being practical h as little to do with it. There are so many great rigs these days. Wanting a "Jeep" will wear off soon. Verse's get a better rig you can use the way you want and have a great time in it. Jeep quality seems on the low side of things imho. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

My wife uses the 4 door as a daily driver. Father in law has the 2door as a daily. They’re just fine for daily drivers. You obviously don’t buy a Jeep for gas mileage. Did I mention that jeeps are awesome? Btw, I have the sneaking suspicion many of the people shit talking jeeps don’t have much experience with jeeps as they are now. Today. Not 30 years ago. Btw, I just bought the new Mazda 3 hatchback. I love it.

Keep an eye out for a used one, for a good deal. Jump on it when you find it. Drive it for a while and if you don't like it, sell it for what you paid for it. No big loss. I had street motorcycles for a long time. When I met my wife and moved into a bigger house I sold my last one. A few years ago I got an itch so I bought a used one. Rode it for 2 years and got tired of it. Sold it for what I bought it for. I did put on 2 new tires and a battery. I think I was out a few hundred bucks, plus the cost of insurance for 2 years. Nothing wrong with buying something and selling it if you don't like it. YOLO. Folks around here want crazy money for CJ7. I really wanted one and looked for probably a year and a half. I was gonna use it as a plow Jeep (we get a lot of snow). Then a Chevy truck came up that fit my bill for an amazing price so I bought it. I would still like a CJ7, but I am not paying what folks want for them. $5k+ for a used POS.

I typically find there is a very strong reverse correlation between Consumer Reports ratings for vehicles and the vehicles actual ability to be useful to me. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

I’m afraid not. I’ve wanted one for about 20 years now... Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. My wife's DD is a Jeep Wrangler too. She absolutely loves it (6 years now) and says it's the best vehicle she's ever owned. Her's is a Sahara Unlimited. Mileage is pretty good too. That said, not so great on the highway, unless you're driving to a Jeep rally. We drove it across Nebraska once in a heavy crosswind. All the aerodynamics of a brick. Nasty. _______________________________________________________ despite them

What I meant is, once you get one! ![]() You will start wanting rid of it. Too many headaches and mechanical gremlins and maintenance cost's, etc. Again, the "Jeep guys will disagree". So take it fwiw. Just one guys opinion. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

Well, what the hell - you're not getting any younger and when you leave this planet it's probably permanent - so get the Jeep and post some pics so we can all celebrate with you! ![]()

I once had the same attitude about Chrysler, which left me in a bit of a quandary: I'm a GM guy, but GM's body designs are mostly boring and their electronics unimaginative--at best. Ford body designs, save the Mustang, are just plain fugly, IMO. (My Lord, they even made the new Lincoln Navigator resemble a freakin' Flex, which is about the ugliest thing to hit the road since the Pontiac Aztek.) Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep have been the only ones turning-out really interesting body designs, but FCA (Fiat/Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep) have had persistent reliability issues about since forever. (Briefly improved while Iacocca was at the helm.) So it was down to nothing but imports, I guess. But then I looked into Jeep Grand Cherokees and found out they actually have a pretty good track record. So that's what I bought. Can't speak to the more jeep-y Jeeps in that respect. Did not research them. But my understanding is they, likewise, share a better reliability rating than other FCA vehicles. "America is at that awkward stage. From one who just dumped a van after a year going with what I thought would be beneficial and practical and just got what he really wanted in the first place. Buy the Jeep. But get 4 doors!! ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I will be your brother, and I'll hold your hand. If you are still looking for help being talked out of it... You have to really "stand in your truth" and honestly assess if you can afford a "want" versus a "need" right now. How does your cash-on-hand emergency fund look? Your long-term emergency reserves? How about your retirement? How about your home--mortgage, repairs, upkeep? Not saying you have to, but are you setting aside money for your kids? Before you answer those questions for yourself, recognize that the costs of not putting aside money now for your future is significant. $50 a week, compounded at 8%, over 30 years is $325,074.89, just for example. Spend the money to make you happy. There's value a to that, and you can't put a price tag on it. Just make sure you understand what you are buying that happiness with, and "stand in your truth" of what you can and can't afford.

I'd be very happy to sell you my wife's '16 Black Bear Edition with a manual trans; I hate the damn thing. However, you might have to let me move in with you, as she loves her Wrangler Unlimited.

"I typically find there is a very strong reverse correlation between Consumer Reports ratings for vehicles and the vehicles actual ability to be useful to me." I've never made it thru the CR Jeep report without being told I should be yearning for more cup holders & some kind of fantasy world where only pavement & high G skid plates are supposed to be significant. At least the illusion of a Greater Freedom than just sitting at stop lights & being hostage to curbs & the common misery of flat landers-all-in-a-row, especially the pleasures of caressing all that leather & mega horsepower thing while stuck on a cigar butt or 2 snowflakes that conveys little pleasure but getting the payment book updated. If you sit in a JK/JKU/JL and it FITS you, you'll know what to do. If you're borrowing money to buy something else, the new JK warranty is as good as anything else is as well. CR is about as reliable for Jeep reviews as CNN is for real news. I can't imagine a lifestyle that confines me to the limits of a mere automobile. I'm not sure what it is I've lost in 'going Jeep crazy' but I can certainly recognize what I've gained. **************~~~~~~~~~~ "I've been on this rock too long to bother with these liars any more." ~SIGforum advisor~ "When the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change, then change will come."~~sigmonkey
