My table partner at gun shows was the county coroner. He thought it made a lot of sense for him to get a jeep because he was constantly walking to places to get dead bodies. So he did the research and bought a 4 cyl. Then complained to me about the awful gas mileage. I told him he should have asked me first. His theory was 4 cyl got better fuel economy. I told him no, they only go slower. If you push them on the road they're going full blast to even keep up with traffic. That gives the terrible fuel economy.

Luckily they don't offer a 4 cyl "option" these days. Only the healthy V6. Those haven't always been healthy, either. Up through 2011 they barely made any go power. Then in 2012 they upgraded to a Mercedes designed engine. This one makes good power.

If you check the EPA gas mileage on say a 2005 wrangler, it shows 17MPG combined on the 4 cylinder and 15MPG combined on the 6 cylinder. Other years may vary but either number sucks.

I've had Wranglers for the last 13 years, first a 2 DR LJR and now a JKUR. I loved the long wheel base LJ and would still have it if I hadn't totaled it. Maybe you can find a nice used LJ?

I would not own a 2 DR JK/JL for my only vehicle. The backseat is very hard to access and there is virtually no storage behind it. We go out with two dogs and gear, couldn't do it in a 2 DR.

My JKU is perfect for us, we go backcountry, a lot, and I do participate in 4 WD events. The 4 DR is great on the highway, 80 MPH no problem, I'm on 35" rubber and 4.10 gears. I do not commute with it and it still gets 12K/yr.

I can't imagine life in UT without a Jeep but we're fortunate to be off road in 15 minutes, a half hour takes us to the Arizona Strip, 4000 miles of unpaved roads!

Holy Crap!!!!!!! Who are you with?
I just got new numbers for the 2016 Expedition EL I picked up from State Farm. I have a $100 collision deductible, $0 comprehensive deductible, and all my coverages jacked up well above state minimums.
My yearly premium is $598 down from $610 for the Sienna.
Kentucky Farm Bureau was a couple bucks cheaper a month but they require $500 deductibles.

I’m with USAA. That’s liability/collision/comprehensive/under/uninsured. 100/300 coverage, $500 deductible for collision and zero for comp. $758 per year, includes a multi vehicle discount.

Must be a NC thing. I checked with a broker last year and the difference was negligible.

Ouch! We’re about spot even in coverage minus the $500 deductible.
Did you check with State Farm? One has to go straight to State Farm as all their agents are independent and don’t allow brokers.
I have been with them for 20 years next month Eek They have always been the cheapest.
Except on my cabin. Their handling of claims (granted have had very few) has been great with no issue. We have multi-car discount and multipolicy as we have homeowners with them as well as a couple personal articles policy.
If I am not mistaken our rates should drop next month as I hit 35 and think that is the age for the next drop in price.

Either way I still say if you can afford it buy the Jeep!!!!

My wife and I crunched the payment numbers, the increase would be negligible for what I want. I've been making extra payments on the Mazda, the new payment would actually be less than what I've been paying including those. A bit more overall, if I got a 4-door. But I really don't want a 4-door. Jeeps have 2 doors! Big Grin

Fuel cost....$130 more a month. I spend about $100-150 currently. That's a significant increase, and I don't see that number getting any better. That's actually why I got the Mazda rather than a Jeep last year. My prior car was a diesel getting 52mpg, but at 13 years/300,000+ miles its dependability was failing. Dropping to 32 was a kick in the gut. I just couldn't drop from 52 down to 16mpg. Increments Wink

My wife had a hybrid Sonata, gets 40mpg or better. Maybe I could just drive hers for my long trips lol

I'd have to re-adjust my monthly budget for the fuel. The insurance and payments would likely fall within monthly surplus, but that fuel cost is painful.

The new JL 2 doors won't hit the lots for a bit. I'll wait and see what our raises look like in July, and pay the Mazda down some more. If I can swing it without changing any of my savings/retirement contributions, I might not be able to convince myself not to!

Not to be an ass, but it sounds like you shouldn’t figure out how to afford it. If $130 is juggling, you should lay off the wants and stick with the needs. I’d like a Rubicon. I’d like a F-250. I’d like an M-16. I’d like to go the Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, and Rangemsster for vacation this year. All of those are wants; I can’t afford them. I’ve been too familiar with debt, unexpected expenses, and financial problems.

You have two children, might have another, and $130/month is a readjustment (without even considering the jacked up insurance)? That’s the perfect modern choice that keeps far too many people always paying someone else, and afraid because they’re one paycheck away......

But if you’ve got the money, enjoy it.

Readjustment as in every 1st of the month I pay myself out of my savings account, where all my pay is deposited. I live within a budgeted number every month, after retirement, savings, etc. is taken care of. There is usually a couple of hundred extra every month from my allocation that goes toward extra car payment. My only debt is the car and a small student loan. I would have to adjust the amount I pay myself every month to fit the new total.

Buy one!

I want a Rubicon pretty bad but the practical side has kept me from it. Also why I haven’t bought the Mustang is planned on getting when the 2018’s came out.

Can’t afford not to buy it.

I am guessing something is plugged in wrong for your Mazda or they are an unadvertised death trap.

My guess is either Mazda drivers drive crazier, or jeeps don’t require $2,000 of work every time they go over a raccoon.

Are they high or low?

My only wreck was in 2008. My only ticket was 2002. I looked last night and my 6 month premium is $357 for my Mazda. That’s with a multi policy discount. I don’t think that’s bad.

Did you tell them you would be selling/dropping the Mazda and that the Jeep will be your daily driver? And was it in writing?

That seems unrealistically low.

Yes and yes. And I haven’t looked, but usually USAA quotes are saved to your account for a week or so, so maybe a yes there too.

It's location.

I have a clean license/record and I'm paying almost twice as much for basic liability on an 18 year old vehicle.

So C, how much are you looking to spend and what model and year are you looking at?
Borrowing the $?
Figured out the payment, interest, insurance, maintenance, gas, accessories, tires, etc, etc, etc?
Wanting one is going to cost a lot less.

2018 JKs are going for a song presently, as the new JL model is concurrent for 2018. I think a 4 door is a better option for my family.

It would be financed through my credit union. Payment essentially the same as my present.

Insurance cheaper than present.

Gas will increase by about $100-$150 a month.

so a new one then. So how much is that going to be per month for all the cost's I mentioned

$500
$600
$700
$800
$1000
more

Please do not tell $350 unless you plan to finance for a decade. Because a $30000.00 vechile will cost you at least double and that is just the vehicle cost.
